Windows Phone 8 can back up SMS and more to Hotmail and Outlook.com

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 will allow users to back up text messages, app lists, accounts, IE favourites, and themes to Hotmail and Outlook.com. When a device is first turned on, users will be given the option to sign in to their Microsoft account to sync data between phone, PC, and even Xbox.

The Verge also reports that Windows Phone 8 will still include the option to automatically upload photos to SkyDrive, but users will now have the option to include video and have greater control over backups.

These extra back up options will remove much of the hassle that is involved and will allow users to make their data even more safe. It will also make the transition from one Windows Phone 8 device to another much more fluid.

Microsoft is likely to announce more information about the back up options at the Windows Phone 8 event in New York on September 5th.

I wonder what it will do with backing up MMS texts with images. I don't want to be using twice the bandwidth from my allotment for each MMS that I both send and receive.

Why would you want to backup your text messages !?????

Same reason people backup emails; a lot of people use sms for business and other serious matters, not just and only trivial ones.

I personally want my chat history to be the same on all devices. So when I leave a conversation on my Windows Phone and continue it on my Windows tablet I can still see all the communication I've had with a certain contact.

I usually chat via the messaging tile's facebook and MSN integration but sometimes I send text messages when someone is offline. If this person responds via facebook then I'd like to see the chat message they responded to. I also hope Whatsapp can be integrated, I hate how it's seperated from the messagin tile while it does use the phone numbers and contact list from WP7.

I hope tha, as rumored a while ago, MS will bring back the ability to sync with the desktop as well.

so long as you can sync device to outlook.com (live) it really doesn't matter, as you can keep desktop in sync with that too.

Or do you mean as in stand alone stncing a la active sync? If so god I hope not, horrible mess that was!

I hope they do because I sure as heck don't want to have to upload 200GB of my music to the cloud just to get it on my device. They really need to do something about the synchronisation even if it means killing off Zune, adding more customisation (encoding in AAC and flexibility in bit rate and encoding quality) to Windows Media Player.

Yes I mean ActiveSync... done right.
Believe it or not there are a lot of people, not to mention companies, who do not care for this "Cloud" frenziness.
Personally I believe that giving people options is always the winning scenario.

Honestly, that's the one feature I wish would come on windows phone 7.8 (+ background Skype)

Fingers crossed

Backing up to Skydrive is worthless when the pictures are shrinked to 25% of there size. I hope this has changed.
