Wing Commander creator's new game is Star Citizen

Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts has been out of the game industry for the past several years. Today, the developer behind one of the most well known game franchises of all time gave the first details of the game which marks his return to game creation, Star Citizen.

As revealed on the game's official website, Star Citizen is indeed a space combat game along the lines of the Wing Commander series. According to the site:

Star Citizen, already 12 months into production, will be launched on the PC and will include all the Chris Roberts hallmarks that fans of his games have come to expect over the years: high quality cutting-edge visuals and technology, a virtual world that is immersive and detailed, a sophisticated storyline that is wide in scope and visceral, heart-pounding space combat.

People will pay to download and play the game, much like a standard PC retail game, but there will also be virtual items that can be bought via an in-game store. Roberts is using a crowd sourcing method to get people to help fund the game, with extra content depending on how much people pledge. While the full game won't be released for another two years to the general public, backers of the crowd sourcing campaign will be able to play a version of the game in about a year.

If you watched some of the videos of Chris showing off the game, he was using an XBOX Controller connected to his PC to control flight. They have stated keyboard mouse, joystick and gamepads will be supported. Along with some other advanced flight systems.

If anyone is in the market for a new joystick to wreak havoc on this game, just looked at Newegg, they have a few joysticks for ~$25'ish (Logitech 963290-0403 Extreme 3D Pro USB Joystick). Not sure how a gamepad would play though.

This game looks amazing... Eve on steroids, and different pay model (Subscription vs Free-to-play + Buy credit system).

Too bad I recently had to throw out my joystick because it was gameport.

Uber sweet. I still have a Logitech Joystick sitting in a box, thank goodness it was USB and not the old joystick/gameport LOL.

This is the game I've been waiting for me. I'm not impressed, I'm more than impressed. It's as if they went into my mind and plucked out one of my gaming fantasies: a space sim made with CryENGINE 3. I always knew it was possible but damn... I didn't know it would look this good.

All I know is I haven't loved a space game since Freelancer.

Liked Darkstar One though...it obviously had its flaws but it was good for a while.

The AI in them drives me mad. Oh look, a space station! We can't make it to the dock! Lets turn around! And turn around! Oh look, a space station! We can't...it's just all kinds of stupid. I've never seen that in any other space game, even the bad ones.

It better have cheesy FMV cut scenes or it's gonna suck

Man, I'll never forget WC3 (I think it was 3) where the Khilrathi Hobbes was like, your best bud and he turned out to be a double traitor and all. Bummmmmmed me the F out at the time as I liked his character quite a bit

Uh, sorry? It's a 15+ year old game, it's not like I meant to spoil anything from a game that old you know.

It's cool, I was over it 5 min after I wrote that.

Don't worry, you're extremely lucky this time, who played the PC version a decade ago didn't get all of the story, there were several deleted scenes one of which explained in detail what really happened with Hobbes: he didn't actually betray anybody and all the chats with him were always entirely honest.

P.S.: I hope you like Schwarzenegger movies

I think I supported this. I say think because I got an error but I got both the amazon payment receipt and news letter subscription confirmation email so I guess it went through. Their site is flaky though so who knows.

oooooh!

Time to dust off my Sidewinder II
