Winner of Apple's 10 billion download contest hung up on Apple

As we reported yesterday, Gail Davis of Kent, UK was the lucky winner of the $10,000 iTunes gift certificate. According to an exclusive interview with Cult of Mac, Mrs. Davis nearly threw the windfall away when she hung up on the winning phone call, thinking that it was merely a prank.

Who can blame her for being suspicious of a mysterious caller offering free money? We’re constantly bombarded with spam and telemarketing calls, making it difficult to separate the real information from the fake. Gail Davis wasn’t even the one who technically downloaded the application, making her even more suspicious of the mysterious call from Apple. After her daughters informed her that the call was legit, she tried to call Apple back but was unable to find anyone who knew anything about the winning phone call. The three were forced to sit, wait, and hope. Luckily for them, Apple called back a few hours later and this time Mrs. Davis was ready to accept the prize.

Also interesting to note is that although her daughters have iPods capable of using applications, she and her husband do not. Due to the winnings they are, “thinking of upgrading our nanos so we can join the party.”  As is typical with many contests, giving out a prize leads to more sales for the company.

What I would do is buy a bucnh of Apple stuff and then sell them brand new on EBAY and get the cash, since the iTunes money isn't transferrable.

For a "techie" you really are pretty ignorant. How many times has it been stated already that the $10,000 can only be used on the store for apps, music, and videos/movies/TV shows?

They really didn't win anything. Apple gave away Apple gift balance which they can only use on Apple products and iTunes and App store, which means whatever they buy Apple is getting the money right back.

Its like a store giving you $10,000 in instore credit. Sure its free money, but basically you are spending THEIR money except you get to keep what you buy.

If the gift voucher can be used on all apple products( iMac, iPods ,iPhones etc..) it would have been much much better wow!!!

over dramatic.

indeed. It's not like she won $10,000 cash.

While $10,000 is still a lot of money it's of a fairly limited value being tied to the itunes store. if i won i'd be selling it.

That's true, although my point was the article makes out that she nearly lost the reward because she thought it was prank. Like Jobs was there and said, "to hell with that bitch, give it to someone else!"

Actually, according to the rules, they could have...

http://www.apple.com/itunes/10...-countdown/rules/index.html

"If a potential winner cannot be contacted, or fails to sign and return the Affirmation within the specified time period, the potential winner is disqualified and forfeits the prize. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, Sponsor may award the applicable prize to an alternate winner by random drawing from among all remaining eligible entries."

eh, I still don't think they'd be so hasty. Not after one phone call.

As far as I know, the new "nanos" don't support aditional apps; or at least mine doesn't. Guess the parents are going to focus on music redemption.

I wondered what would happen if it was a kid who downloaded the billionth app.
Little do we know that it was Steve Jobs himself...

If they're giving away $10,000 then it doesn't lead to more sales because it's their own money...

The line might not have been clear, but the winners will have to spend their own money to purchase two new iPod touch devices - the iTunes gift card doesn't count towards hardware.

A couple of years ago Unviersal Studios gave me a free pass to their theme park. I ended up spending several hundred dollars when I went on vacation there, which is exactly what they were hoping for.

This.

I've said this in another thread on this topic--this "contest" isn't costing Apple $10K--nowhere near.

The least they could do is let the winner use some of that "credit" towards the iPod upgrades mentioned in the article. If she can't even redeem a **$10K** voucher towards hardware that costs a few hundred bucks...that tells you all you really need to know. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Apple didn't strike a deal with the music labels so this isn't costing them anything but the bandwidth needed to transfer the music.

This is even less generous than Apple "donating" 33 iPods to the Chilean miners late last year.

Now watch the Apple fanboy responses...

Won't the gift card be linked to her iTunes account when redeemed, not her daughters' meaning they cannot use it? Never had an iTunes gift card so not sure how they work.

Her daughters are using her account by the looks of it.

You can use an iTunes account with as many different devices as you want, and up to 5 different computers.

Due to the winnings they are, “thinking of upgrading our nanos so we can join the party.” As is typical with many contests, giving out a prize leads to more sales for the company.

Too bad there isn't a gift card for that...

Yep, if you give me $10,000, I'll gladly blow $500 towards your products. Any takers?

Good luck spending 10,000 on music and apps.

Considering Apple's music, and device prices I could easily spend 10k on them. Not that I would.
