WP7: Facebook app updated, push notifications enabled

Hot on the heels of the Mango beta being put into developers eager hands today (which has deep Facebook integration), Microsoft has made available a sizeable update to it's Facebook application on the platform.

The update finally brings push notifications to the platform, and seems to be much more responsive than previous versions. This means that when a notification is triggered on the Facebook website, that the user will be notified immediately on Windows Phone, rather than having to actually open the app to find out what has happened. The push notification support allows the user to select which notifications they want to use it for, such as comments or photo tags, and disable ones that may be quite noisy.

On top of push support, the application now requests "sensor" access as well as "phone identity," though it is not clear what this is for.

Having push notifications is being warmly welcomed by Windows Phone users, and it means that users may not need to actually open the application if they are running Mango, as the platform has built in support for previewing them. Mango is the next major release of Windows Phone OS, and was released to developers that are registered on the App Hub today.

To download the updated Facebook app, click here (Zune client required).

I have just bought samsung omnia 7. I have to admit using WP7 on the hand is even better than look at it through video and demo. This OS is awesome. Don't be a skeptic try it. The platform is getting mature.

Does anyone else have the problem of using the toast messages and it only loads the FB app not the actual notification??
I thought touching it would take you to a window with the notification/tagg/comment and allow you to write something there.

I guess this is the first try they are making at it. Has anybody seen if the tile is indeed "live". I only got toasts, but anything on the facebook app tile.

Does push mean notification on the live tile? Cuz I got nothing on the live tile so what good is that?

It has live tile and toast notification.. (Similar to getting a new sms)

I still get nothing on the live tile, and have toast and tile count enable. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. I still have not seen one screen shot of what the live tile is supposed to look like either. Is this feature working for you?

If this notifications work as expected I may turn off the option in Facebook website to send me email notifications. The time I have set to refresh my personal email account is 15 min. Hopefully the push will act sooner than that...

I am on O2

I have had a couple of notifications come through. It didn't hold the setting first time I enabled it.

Blue bar across the top as the notification. Nicely done. Much better than the iPhone 'Stop whatever you are doing' type of notification

Toast and tile notifications are not working immediately for me. Still waiting and its been ~10 minutes.

Your friends weren't impressed with wp7 just because of the first edition of the Facebook App?

Just installed the update, seems a bit better all round it is a much needed update. Just hope the notifications come through in decent time.

I have installed the updated version of Facebook client on my WP7 device. But I have a problem: How do I know if an application/ game has been updated? It seems user need to search for the application and see if a new version is available. In iOS, the App Store will automatically notify you that which applications have new version available.

The app store tile will update with the number of updated apps you have. You just open the marketplace and hit the update link. Then update all, and it'll download all updates for all apps you have installed. It tends to work better than the iOS updater too, as there's no "update using iTunes instead of OTA" or crap like that.

I too noticed the facebook app didn't make it to the marketplace notification yet, but as an app developer myself I've seen it take up to 24 hours to fully propogate everywhere.

Also, the Marketplace live tile shows you the number of updates that are available.

Is it just me or has it also got a speed update ? The app seems to be as fluid as the UI now. Before it just didn't feel 100% like a tiny jitter when sliding onto the new bit while it was loading. It now goes to it fluid and then loads it.

True, but the problem is everyone is on Facebook. It will take a long time before it becomes as popular (if ever).

Just import all your contacts, followers..... from Facebook to Google+ :-)

Or you could just get a good facebook app and not have to mess with yet another me to google beta that probably won't get anywhere.

I wish the Android app had push notifications!

Don't worry, WP7's push notifications don't even work most of the time. It sucks.
