WP7: Developers to get Mango RTM before release [Update: Its true!]

Microsoft today proudly announced that Windows Phone 7 "Mango" has hit Release to Manufacturing (RTM) and has been handed to carriers for testing across the world, ahead of its official launch on new and old devices. Now, we're hearing murmurs that the release might actually hit developer devices before it comes from carriers, if they are developers.

Mobility Digest posted a screenshot of a tweet from Brandon Watson, which seems to give confirmation that Mango will hit devices before carriers release it, so that developers can continue to build their applications. Whilst the tweet doesn't outright say anything, and we're really reading between the lines here, the news of Mango RTM hitting developer devices lines up with everything we've heard too.

Right now, developers are able to load Windows Phone OS "Mango" trial build 7661 onto their devices to test and build applications, but they are required to revert back to a retail backup to upgrade to Mango RTM when it comes to carriers. The "gold" build of Mango is 7720.

If you are holding out for the next revision of Microsoft’s mobile OS, the end is near. Even though carriers could slow down the process, you can bet that Microsoft will be putting the pressure on the get this update out the door as soon as possible.

Windows Phone 7 OS "Mango" is expected to be available on new and retail devices in September. Mango brings over 500 new features to the platform, including IE9 with HTML5 support, mulititasking, OS-wide IM integration, Twitter + Facebook integration, and more.

Update: Winrumors reports that Cliff Simpkins on behalf of Microsoft has said ”We’re working to get devs an updated build soon. Stay tuned to the dev blog.” He also went on to tweet  "Give me a day to get an official answer for folks," when questioned about developers getting the bits. Hopefully we'll have more news tomorrow!

Hmmmm. I am getting an update to my HD7 right now, as we speak. I use T-Mobile. Anyone else? Is this "it" or is this a pre-update?

Oh important note. I just realised that you won't see this update until you get Zune player update to 4.8 as this was a pre-requisite to install the beta so it only makes sense that you will need it for the RTM so I'm going to keep an eye out for that

Oh, I didn't know that. I just checked Zune and it says there's a software update, but I can't figure out where it even says what version I now have... lol Can anyone point me to where that is?

Thanks for the info. I installed an update but it was still 4.7, so that was a false alarm... I didn't know they have 4.8 coming with Mango. I guess we'll have to keep an eye out for that as well.

4.8 is what the current beta testers get when they update their dev phones but we might get a newer client than this when Mango rolls out to end users.

While in Zune click Settings/General/Information/About Zune

4.8 is available in the wild, although unofficially; look for it......

It would be really awesome if this was a real update and didn't require devs to void their warranties or go back to a previous version when the next update ships or anything...

They wont need to, its RTM now, the only reason you did for beta was for... it was a beta

That sounds great. I'm glad to hear that and definitely hope that's the case. If so I'll definitely be installing the RTM...

I really hope they apply a lot of pressure on carriers to get this out ASAP. I have little faith AT&T wants to upgrade my existing device.

+1

Neither my wife, nor myself even have 7392 yet on our Focus. We have NoDo though. AT&T thus far is the only thing I dislike about the WP7.

You should check Zune today then. 7392 is now available for all Focus models.

AT&T is likely going to bundle it with Mango. +1 on the hoping for AT&T to get their head out though since they are always the last to release the updates.

AT&T will screw this up, again....

True, but it could resonably be interpreted as a "wink, wink".

One can hope. I just hope the update is a real update and not handled the way the Beta was... Where you had to uninstall Mango to update to the final Mango and void your warranty and everything. That's what kept me from installing the Beta...

Smiley faces do not imply confirmation.

Think of it this way. What if you wrote to a girl:

"Wouldn't it be great if we could go on a date this Friday night?"

And she replied:

"Hmmm that would be great "
