WSJ: Apple experimenting with 13-inch iPad and larger iPhones

That's no iPad Mini, that's the new iPhone Maxi!

According to the Wall Street Journal, everyone’s favourite fruit company is now testing devices with larger screens.

The WSJ reports that Apple has asked its suppliers to send over phone screens that are larger than 4 inches and some tablet screens slightly under 13 inches. This seems to indicate that Apple is experimenting with different form factors for its devices.

Apple has recently come under heavy criticism from its investors and fans for appearing to be uncompetitive in a market that is now dominated by Samsung and Google. The latest iPhone has been seen as a simple iteration even though it now sports a 4-inch screen, a jump above the previous 3.5-inch screens. At the same time the iPad Mini has shown that there’s demand for more variety in the company’s line-up.

Samsung and Apple’s other competitors have flooded the market with a plethora of devices, sporting every imaginable screen size. While this is not a perfect strategy it has led to success for Samsung as well as increased the demand for phones with large screens.

Of course there’s no indication that these new iDevices will actually hit markets. Companies routinely experiment with new form-factors and ideas and right now there’s no indication that this is a serious project inside of Apple. Then again we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Apple is trying to diversify its line-up.

"Apple has recently come under heavy criticism from its investors for appearing to be uncompetitive in a market that is now dominated by Samsung and Google."

There, fixed that statement for you...

LOL Apple's newest innovation policy is to do what everyone else is already doing. Steve Jobs was Apple and now that he is gone there is no hope for the company. The company tanked the first time he left so he had to come back. He can't come back this time. Sell your Apple stock.

A little disproportionate reaction to a rumor. In the whole Apple and Samsung court fiasco we learned that Apple experimented and continues to experiment with lots of different sizes and form factors for their devices that mostly never see the light of day.

This is what Apple has come to I guess. No more innovating, just take their already overpriced phones and tablets and change the size of them every couple of years. I have to agree with TechieXP, Jobs was a lying egotistical nutjob.

All the fans are now saying Apple should make bigger devices. Yet there exist bigger devices and for years Apple trained you into thinking their size is the perfect size and all you rambled on about how anything bigger than 3.5" is too big.

Now you all want something bigger? If you really wanted bigger, why are you still holding on to your Apple gear. There are more than enough suitable replacements for an iDevice.

To sit and hold on to a piece of junk that is outdate before it even hits the shelf, yet costs the same price is crazy. There is no way I'd do that.

13" iPad? For what. They spent 4 models telling you 9.7" is the best size and that all the OEMs would abandon 10" devices for smaller. Yet it is Apple who went smaller.

Or how Jobs said no one wants one of those "hummer-like" phones, yet sales numbers in 2010 showed that more than 25% of the phones sold were above 4.3".

Yet Order_66 says Apple isn't that stupid? Haha. What is stupid is how the fans sat their and believe everything Jobs said in words, while facts in numbers showed he was a lying egotistical self-righteous out of touch with reality hypocrite.

Some users actually have a preference towards the current size (being able to use the phone with one hand is a big plus for me) while others just really really love iOS and all the apps that come with it. You have every right to your opinion that it is a piece of junk and outdated before it even hits the shelves. In the end everyone is voting with their bucks, not with long rants in comment sections.

Maybe the 13" screen is for a laptop/pad convertible. That makes more sense to me. I mean, are consumers clamoring for larger tablets? Not sure. But a 13" laptop/hybrid with iOS instead of OSX might have an audience.

Well good that they didn't add touch to OS X and call it the next generation Mac

Apple might be dumb sometimes but they are not stupid, unlike ms.

If there is one thing that could get me personally interested in an iPad, it would be one with a MUCH larger screen (iPad Mega?) - one of my biggest problems with virtual keyboards on tablets is they are just plain too small (due to the tablet screen size).

What? What kind of fingers do you have...Cucumbers? On a 10" device there is no way the keyboard is to small, no matter landscaped or portrait. Why not just get an external keyboard then?

I'd love to see pictures of your hands to not fit on an iPad 10" LOL
Hulk hands? Or whats his name from the Fantastic Four? Oh yeah...Thing. Haha. If he has hands like that then yeah I feel for him. But unless he is deformed, it would be impossible for an iPad onscreen keyboard to be to small.
