Xbox 360's new Epix app is experiencing difficulties [Update]

Microsoft's major Dashboard update for its Xbox 360 console is now available worldwide. But that doesn't mean the release of the new user interface has been 100 percent smooth. Indeed, US users have found that one of the new streaming movie apps that was supposed to be included isn't working at all.

That happens to be the Epix app which was supposed to allow US Xbox 360 owners access to the movie library of the pay cable TV channel. Epix runs new and classic movies from MGM, Paramount and Lionsgate (indeed the channel has the rights to run nearly all of the James Bond movies in December).

A post on the Xbox Live status page admits to issues with the Epix app without going into specifics, saying, "We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience." All of the other streaming video apps, including Netflix, Hulu Plus and ESPN, are up and running normally.

Meanwhile, the reaction to the entire Xbox Dashboard update has been, rather predictably, mixed from Xbox 360 users. News.com has posted up some of the reactions from users via their Twitter messages. One Xbox 360 gamer, "Kelvinwins", said, "Metro design is lovely, but the app selection should have been ready for launch. Just a new skin until then." However, another Twitter messenger, "ShotZ 007", said the new Dashboard is "miles better than the old one."

Update - The Epix app is now apparently working

Details are so vague on all of this xbox live tv stuff. It looks to me it wont work for me because I dont have Cox or Verizon fios or the other providers that it says you need. Also need to pay a subscription? these are just apps thats not tv.

Hey at least you got the update, Myself like others who have had the pre-release beta never got the full update and we're just stuck with the pre-release.

You're on the release version. The pre-release channel is just continuing to be there, atm.

Uh, no? Then something is wrong for you, because the pre-release updated to the final version a few days before launch, and everything is working normally here - I just have an extra 'pre-release' tab for now.

I found that a couple of my apps like Zune, and Netflix weren't working because of a corrupted download. If you go to your Xbox hard drive and delete the offending app and redownload it you'll probably find that it works now.

This new dash is about one thing and one thing only: Ads.

They're everywhere. They're large. And they're obnoxious.

Do a bing search; You'll see between 3 and 5 "tiles" in the results; and there will be an ad smack dab between them results.

Home screen: 50% ads.
Video screen: 80% ads.
Games screen: 80% ads.
Music screen: 80% ads.
Apps screen: 12% ads.

They also waste a metric ton of screen real-estate. The current page occupies just the center portion of the screen ... a full 50% of the screen is effectively wasted. Metro is all about using the real-estate to its fullest extent (and then some). I suppose in the long run this is for the best, as they probably would have just filled the remaining space with ads and sponsored content.

The voice recognition for bing search is also frustrating. Try searching for "Michael Buble" ... I must have tried at least 30 times and got a ton of different results, including "michael bouley", "my lovely", "michael boom lay", "michael clayton" (!), "my lai", "michael moon boy", "michael butler", "michael willet", "michael buble 8" ...

The accuracy of search results is also very poor. All sorts of unrelated crap appears in the results, and I have no idea why. This is exacerbated by it including "everything" by default; so if I search for a music artist I get movies, games, videos, etc. If it defaulted to a genre appropriate for the subject being searched on (say "music" for a music artist) it would have returned a much more appropriate set of results.

All in all, a very dissappointing result.

I like the ads. There are a lot of things that can be delivered in those ads.
I'm not a 'hardcore' gamer wasting all my life on websites and forums to get details about upcoming releases, etc. The ads stand in nicely to avoid investing the extra time.

As far as your issues with Bing search,
a) Have you run Kinect audio calibration?
b) TellMe has never been good with Proper Names. Period. Microsoft are working to address the issue.
c) In terms of accuracy, the integration is still in its infancy. Give it 9 months with 35Million users hammering it. That sort of aggregate data is needed to correct the issues.

I'd call myself a hardcore casual gamer, I do see the use of ads, sometimes,
Game ads on the games tab, video ads on the video tab, etc, but on the home tab? why is there friggin' ads on the home tab.

And the lack of customization kills this whole update, this dashboard is a few steps backwards for the xbox.

I'm glad you like the Ads. I don't. Your pleasure does not lessen my displeasure.

I don't mind SOME Ads, but they prioritized ad placement over usability. They were so focused on putting ads on each of the panels that they buried functionality you actually USE on the console under sub menus. Go to the Video panel, then go to "my video apps". There are a whopping 3 options here, one of which takes you to "zune" (already present on the main panel), one to start media center, and one that takes you to another screen to browse for videos to play. What kept them from putting one extra square on the main panel?

I also don't mind as much when the ads are relevent. Oh, the ads. Ads that point me to a video on Hulu Plus (which I don't subscribe to), four for movies I have no intention of watching, one for a useless "news & tips" video, one for basketball (which I absolutely hate), one that launches zune showing tv episodes to purchase, and one has text so small I can't read it on a 55" screen. Brilliant. These are nothing but a complete waste of my time.

They did such a bad job with this that complaining to a complete stranger on the internet who has no ability to do anything about it is actually more satisfying than using the new dash.

Regarding tell me, yes I've done the audio calibration. My setup is probably as close to "best case" as anyone could expect for such a device. The fact that they shipped knowing that the bing search wasn't good with proper names should speak volumes -- in that the only thing you can really search for IS proper names. If it gets better in the future, great, but they shipped it broken, and the fact is that it works poorly right now.

Well, on the bright side, the way these apps are installed/deployed, I'm guessing using MS's click-once, or was that run-once? Server side tech, they can be updated on the fly without you knowing and be fixed quick compared to them being installed locally or hirdwired into the dashboard and need a big update to the whole thing.

Yes I know you do download and install part of the app at least.

Yup, had this come up right after update. Irritating, for sure. What was the initial delay for? Surely, it was to make sure everything was working...right?

And I agree that more of the apps should have been available. There's no reason why HBOGO can't work right now.

I didn't realise you had insider knowledge on the workings of their business relationship.

I also find that the Dailymotion App a lot of times isn't as responsive as it should be. When I hit the O button or press A, I'll get that one or two second lag that shouldn't be there!

You're using the word "indeed" in places it shouldn't be used. Also, "Indeed, US users have found that one of the new streaming movie apps that was supposed to be included." is a sentence fragment.

Thank you so much for your much needed corrections.

And many UK users can't even access the full application marketplace, I can't even download apps.

There isn't a full applications marketplace for anyone in the UK is there? It's only the social tab.

The Zune app crashes for me, I get just a black screen when trying to start it.

App downloads are working fine here. I did have to delete the older versions first (I think likely due to running the prerelease dashboard), but fine since then.
