Xbox Live's cloud services are currently down

If you are experiencing some issues with accessing cloud-based save game files on your Xbox 360 console, you are not alone. Microsoft has confirmed that it is experiencing some problems with its cloud features for users of Xbox Live for the console as well as Xbox.com.

The issues began earlier today and the Xbox Live status page now shows the following message:

Members attempting to access their stored information from the Cloud will receive a 0x807b0198 status code instead. Our engineers are hard at work and will have the Cloud back up and functioning as quickly as they can. Thank you so much for your continued patience and please check back with us in 30 for an updated message.

Of course, we will update this post when things are resolved. It's important to keep in mind that these issues are at the moment confined to the cloud systems on Xbox Live. Online multiplayer, video streaming and other services are still online and working.

Developing....

Another day and another cloud service has issues, funny how the cloud was being touted as the best thing ever! Yet ever other day we have a service somewhere in the cloud that falls over!

Since Microsoft added being able to save game files in the cloud, I've been using it exclusively. My understanding of it was that it would also be saved locally "and" in the cloud storage, but I found out the hard way that's not the case. I was trying to play a quick game of Madden 13 to continue my career last night and couldn't because my save game files were in the cloud (which was down) and not stored locally as well. They need to add a hard redundant check to make sure stuff like that gets saved in both places in case the service goes down again.

ahh who cares? this sort of thing happens all the time

I think the point is that it doesn't... Live has been very reliable. This sort of thing is rather unusual.

I understand this sorta thing happening with ps3 but Xbox I pay 60 bucks a year and I would go outside, but it's 20 degrees. I just regret relying on cloud so much

The one time I start using Cloud Saves... If I can't access them even while offline, then I have no use for it. Back to saving on the hard drive.

Online multiplayer, video streaming and other services are still online and working.

Since these are also hosted by the 'Cloud' - maybe the title of the article is just a bit misleading if not ignorant?

Authentication, Account information, Multiplayer hosting, even Halo 4 matching are all handled on the Windows Azure NT Cloud services.

The only service that seems to be affected is 'saved content' to the Cloud.

Maybe...
"Xbox Online content and game save information is unavailable."

CLOUD SERVICES are NOT DOWN unless you are a complete idiot and consider game saves to be the entirety of what cloud services entail.

Agreed.

Since they let you save games on a USB thumb drive, I've always felt that the cloud service was a bit redundant anyway

That's precisely the point. It shouldn't be your ONLY place for save games.
I have my profile on USB, with save games and sync set up to HDD.
When I head to my friend's place, I load from cloud.
When I get back home, cloud save syncs back to HDD.

The cloud was being silly the other day as it wasn't registering game saves for SSX, so I deleted all my cloud saves for all game, fully freeing my space with the intention of disabling the cloud as a drive, even when empty it won't let me disable..

Well that sucks. Since it's been available, I have exclusively saved all of my game saves on my cloud drive. I guess I'll just have to wait before I can play anything. I hope whatever caused the outage didn't cause any data corruption.

The XBOX keeps a copy of your cloud data locally and syncs it from time to time. If you can't reach the cloud you *should* still be able to play games who's save-state you keep in the cloud.

This is true, scorp508; however, not if you're trying to log in from another system (like I am).
