OpenAI today announced that it is acquiring Statsig, a popular experimentation platform that enables organizations to run A/B testing, feature flagging, real-time decisioning, session replays, marketing experiments, web analytics, and more. Several leading tech companies, including Microsoft, OpenAI, Atlassian, and Notion, use Statsig for product development.
OpenAI believes that bringing Statsig in-house will strengthen its ability to accelerate experimentation across its products and services. Once the acquisition is approved and completed, Statsig will become part of OpenAI but will continue to operate independently from its current Seattle office. OpenAI stated that it will take a measured approach to any future integration, ensuring continuity for current customers.
While OpenAI"s acquisition of Statsig makes sense at a product engineering level, the real intention appears to center on hiring Vijaye Raji, CEO of Statsig. OpenAI revealed that Vijaye Raji will become CTO of Applications at OpenAI, reporting to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications. In this role, Vijaye will lead the product engineering teams for ChatGPT and Codex.
Vijaye Raji, incoming CTO of Applications at OpenAI, said:
“Joining OpenAI as CTO of Applications is an extraordinary opportunity to bring my experience scaling consumer and enterprise products to a mission I deeply believe in: advancing AI in ways that are capable of solving hard problems, reliable, and truly beneficial to people everywhere. The journey with Statsig has been deeply gratifying, leading me to this moment and giving me conviction that we will continue helping teams ship better software every day.”
Along with Vijaye Raji’s appointment, OpenAI also announced a couple of other major leadership changes. Srinivas Narayanan, VP of Engineering, will transition to a new role as CTO of B2B Applications at OpenAI. In this role, Srinivas will focus on serving OpenAI’s products and services for startups, enterprises, and governments.

Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer, will transition to a newly formed team called OpenAI for Science, which will build an AI-powered platform to accelerate scientific discovery.

The acquisition of Statsig is a strategic move for OpenAI, representing both a product engineering improvement and a significant talent acquisition. This, combined with the leadership changes, signals a clear focus on improving its product development and also expanding its focus into enterprise and scientific domains.
