Back in 2021, Spotify introduced "Developer Mode," a sandboxed environment where developers can test and validate their application ideas with a small group of up to 25 users. Now, the company is changing how the mode works in an effort to "safeguard" artists and their intellectual property, as automation and AI continue to advance.
Over time, advances in automation and AI have fundamentally altered the usage patterns and risk profile of developer access, and at Spotify"s current scale these risks now require more structured controls.
In response, we are making changes to Spotify for Developers to better protect creators, partners, listeners and the platform.
Starting Wednesday, 11 February, all newly created Development Mode Client IDs will be subject to new rules. Developers wishing to use the mode will now need a Spotify Premium account.
Each developer will be limited to a single Development Mode Client ID, and each application will be restricted to just five authorized test users. The company will also limit API access to a smaller set of supported endpoints. Roughly a month later, on March 9, these same requirements will also apply to all existing Development Mode integrations.
The new changes to the developer mode API are the first significant update for developers on Spotify"s platform this year.
The end users, on the other hand, have seen multiple updates, with the latest being "About the Song." This new feature provides behind-the-scenes details and context about music through swipeable cards in the "Now Playing" view. The information is sourced from a third party and is currently in beta for Premium users only in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.
The music streaming giant also recently updated its in-app DM feature, introducing group chats, allowing you to create conversations with up to 10 people you"ve previously interacted with on the platform.
Spotify Premium prices in the US, Estonia, and Latvia are also seeing an increase. The Individual Plan has increased to $12.99 per month, the Duo Plan is now $18.99, the Family Plan costs $21.99, and the Student Plan has gone up to $6.99.
