Why are PC Connectors and Power Supplies still relatively complicated?
by Sir Topham Hatt- 1 reply

In the advent of USB connectors and such, why do we still have the large clips from the PSU to motherboards? And some PSUs that claim to be modular but aren't quite, molex connectors and such? Or standardising connectors so instead of 3-pins here and 4-pins there, it's just USB-C or something similar. It seems that in 10/20 years, not much has really changed in this regard.

Specs: EVGA rtx 2070 super i7 8700k asus z370-p 16 gb ddr4 2666 Mhz corsair rm850x psu corsair aio water cooler My pc's been working completely fine for almost a year now, been adding new components, most recent addition was an m.2 drive. I took out my gpu so I didn't have to worry about hitting it when I was putting my m.2 drive in, put it back, and now pc won't give a display. Turns on completely fine (fans spin and lights turn on) just no input. GPU will spin its fans for about 20-30 seconds before shutting off. display port cable has been pulled out and put back repeatedly to see if it's not seated properly, tried using an HD…

What to do with old USB drives?

I have a couple of 1GB, 2GB and even 4GB memory sticks that I can't quite think what to do with now as all are likely to sit in a drawer and do nothing. Can anyone think of anything I could do with them? The ONLY thing I can think of is downloading a base set of drivers for each PC I have, so if something happens, I have some drivers for them ready go to - but that's two memory sticks out of about 6. Just need to decide whether I should get a larger SSD for transferring files between PCs (they're on the same network but can't see each other for some reason - need to look into this more), or just some larger memory sticks.

motherboard charging question
by Izlude- 0 replies

Hi all. Mobo is aorus gaming 7 op (z370). I was testing all the USB ports on the mobo to see which one charges my phone faster (galaxy A20). For reference, the charging block that came with the phone gets it to 60% in about 30 mins. Screen registers "fast charging". I'm just going to make a list with notes to let you see what goes on and if there's some kind of power issue I might be missing... spoiler, the front USB type A (realtek) charges 55% in 30 mins. Intel (rear) 5x USB 3.1 Gen 1 - charge about 1-2% every 5 mins. (2x are DAC-UP 2 ports, no difference in charge even when set to +0.3v) Asmedia (rear) 1x USB 3.1 Gen 2 type A (red p…

Just a question... on an old DELL Latitude E4310 can higher DDR3 memory speeds than 1066 also be applied? The max RAM is 8 GB, but some higher speeds like 12800 are somewhat cheaper....

Coping files to Synology DS220+ is slow.

Hello. I just got my Synology DS220+ this week and the whole configuration went smoothly. The only issue that I am currently facing is went I try to copy files throw the network the transfer rate 40 to 70 mbps, which is slow. I tried also using the network cable but it is the same (on cat6 it is 1000 mbps). I tested also the cable connected to the NAS and it is working fine. My guess is the file system of BTRFS could be the reason behind this as I have searched online and many people complain about this (on Synology and other systems) but I didn't find a solution. Also, I am guessing the RAM 2GB is small and making this happen (Please explain if the RAM do rel…

Just a curiosity question. If I place my hand 1" above the MX keys with no contact the back light comes on, same if covered by an A4 sheet but just a smidge closer. I can't find anything on it Google. I presume it's detecting eletrical charges?

Hello All In Terms of Peformance, and Extra Games for Gaming Desktop PC, (Specs are Gigabyte B460M_DS3H, Intel 10700, 16gb of Ram, Geforce 1660 Super, Wifi6 TP Link AX3000/Bluetooth 5.0, 1TB Storage Drive, 1TB Game SSD, and 500GB Boot M.2 NVme Samsung 970 Evo Plus) My Question tonight is would it be better system performance wise to use the WD Black 4TB internally as extra storage of say Documents, Downloads, Music, and Videos, or Extra games that doesn't quite fit on the 1TB Game SSD, or is my current setup good enough, Currently 4TB is used in External enclosure as extra backup drive, Main backup drive is 8TB Samsung SMR Drive. an…

Razer support sucks 1 2

My Basilisks V2 scroll wheel stopped working properly (super slow on scroll and it also has a bounce effect when scrolling) also, when pressing the scroll wheel button to close a tab, it started closing two tabs. I made this clear in a support request on Aug 25 and they have only been able to respond once a day since. After providing video evidence of the behavior (twice in the same support ticket) and trying the mouse on a different machine without Synapse installed they approved a replacement on Aug 26, but since then once a day they have updated the ticket with yet more procedures to follow. Since that approval I have had to confirm I had the latest firmware in the mou…

Help with New Build HTPC
by Sir Topham Hatt- 0 replies

I currently have a low ability PC that holds 4-6 hard drives, one SSD the rest traditional HDDs that's connected to my TV via HDMI. It's probably an Intel i3 or i5 with a non-fan graphics card, on board 5.1 sound. It did struggle to run a 4K film, which is a shame but I'd be looking at upgrading to be able to play them if possible. It's running Windows 10 Pro with Plex. Whenever we want to watch something we have stored, we just push the power button and use the Plex app on the TV. I only really "see" Windows when I'm copying data as I can't get it to talk to my other PC through the network. I was wondering whether something like a Synology would …

HI guys. I posted before that I used to have a qnap device with 2 bays since 2018 but broke this year. I tried everything I know to fix it but with no luck. To find a replacement I found the Synology DS720+ that I believe it should last longer than the Qnap. Also this time I am getting the extended warranty with it, to make it a total of 5 years. But I believe that NAS storages should last more than 3 to 5 years. Comparing to a desktop computer that I purchase on 2011 and it is still working except that it is outdated. So what are your experience for NAS devices for home use? what lasted the most? Thanks,

my laptop has an AMD ryzen 7 4800H with integrated AMD radeon graphics, a GTX 1660 TI, my OS is in windows 10. My laptop has a 144hz display and an external monitor (60hz) that is connected to my laptop which works PERFECTLY FINE before everything. So on my laptop screen, DOTA 2 was open while in my external monitor/display, I have my Discord and website open. I was just watching youtube vids when suddenly my monitor froze then laptop display turned blue with text saying " ;( windows ran into a problem" or something like that. At first I thought it was the fabled blue screen that breaks your computer but to my suprise it just automatically restarted my laptop,…

Greetings all, I'm aware you all have a lot more knowledge than I do when it comes to PCs so I'd like to present you my new 1080tt that turned up broken.. Down below are some images of the back of the PCB, I've indicated what looks like a Mosfat socket (yellow slot next to the rest) , but with no Mosfat inserted.. (or whatever on God's green earth they are) I'm just wondering if that empty slot is common with the cards or do I have a broken one that needs replacing? Thanks guys, looking forward to your response.

I'm looking into customizing a Thinkpad Nano and was wondering if the vPro is really worth the extra $260 associated with it? What does it do exactly? I plan on keeping it for 5+ years, I won't allow anyone to remote connect to it for troubleshoot.

I bought my laptop in 2015 so it is getting up there in age i assume. One day a few weeks ago it shutdown 3 times on mw within a 10 minute period. it has been fine ever since. I decided to image the machine just in case something happens to it. After about 20 minutes during imaging it is turning off again. I tried 2 different imaging software and it happens with both after 20 minutes. Does it sound like this laptop is on its way out or could something else be causing this? Your opinions are most welcomed plz. Thx

hi, At first, I was seeing my external HDD on my laptop without issues but now I am not. I then tried it on my desktop and couldn't see it on there either. I then tried it on my test desktop and it saw it on there but I had to format it on there. After doing that, I placed it on my desktop and it saw it but i had to format it on there as well. When I tried it on my laptop, it still doesnt show up. I checked it on computer management and it doesnt appear there either. Is there away to fix this so I can use the external HDD on my laptop again? If yes, what do I need to do to fix this plz? TIA

Hey all, I would love to get some help regarding the issue I am having. I recently switched to a smaller case requiring me to switch the mobo to micro-atx as well. I didn't want to spend too much money so I didn't upgrade anything. My build is: Ryzen 5 1600 MSI Mortar B350M EVGA GTX1080 FTW EVGA SuperNova 750W 16GB Corsair Vengeance My problem is that the PC turns on and stays on, but I am not getting any display out of the GPU. The GPU has its LED on, and the fans start, but die right away. There is no integrated graphics, so I can't debug with it. I don't hear any POST beeps, but I am also not sure …

3070ti poor performance?
by patseguin- 2 followers

I recently bought a 3070ti and have been playing some RTX games like Godfall and Doom Eternal. I've found the performance to be pretty bad. Pretty choppy and almost not even playable. Do multiple monitors effect performance much? My primary monitor is a Samsung Odyssey G7 at 240hz 1440p. I also have a secondary LG 4K monitor just for having other stuff open. I disconnected the 4K monitor and played a bit of Godfall and the performance was way better, pretty much what I expected with RTX games. Does having a 2nd display, especially a 4K, hurt gaming performance that much?

Alienware Alpha EGPU Problem GTX 1080ti

Hi, I have an Alienware Alpha R2 with an i7 4785t and Nvidia on board graphics. I recently bought a 600w PSU, EXP GDC graphics card Dock and a 1080ti ROG Strix to go with it. I plug in everything apart from the power to the 8 pin slot on the side of the GPU, the GPU fans start spinning and it lights up, but as soon as I plug in the external power to the GPU it shuts off, as soon as I unplug it again it comes back on, I'm not sure what is happening? Any help? If I am not explaining anything clearly then please just ask and I will elaborate. Thanks for viewing.

Capacitor replacement on ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe... 1 2
by ThaCrip- 1 follower

I mainly have one question in regard to 'extremely low ESR' capacitors and your more typical 'low ESR' capacitors which are easier to find and generally a bit cheaper etc. because online I noticed a seller say the following... "820uF 6.3V Nichicon HN - Intended for computer motherboards. These have an extremely low ESR but also less long term endurance than the Rubycon ZLJ. The HN capacitors are primarily intended for motherboards starting from around 2002 until the early 2010s, when motherboards stopped using this type of capacitor. For most other applications the Rubycon ZLJ capacitors are preferable. Late 1990s (and most pre-Pentium4 era) motherboards don't…

Rx 470 Short Circuit

So, I was playing shadow of the tomb raider last night (I`m not a massive gamer, just casual now and then) when my system just completely shut down! At first i thought it was the PSU as when I tried turning it back on the fan would start a fraction then nothing. I had a spare PSU knocking about so swapped it out...same thing! Next I took the graphics card out and put a real old one in and the system booted fine and is working fine right now. Did some testing on the GPU and found that crossing any of the power pins would show a dead short. Now the bottom 3 (on the right as you`re looking at it from inside the case) should be the 12v and the remain…

This will be my 3rd AMD based computer. First being the Atholon 64 x2, then moved to intel for two builds. Now back to AMD. My most recent AMD build is running a Threadripper 3970x, running esxi. 256 GB ram, 12 TB nvme storage. Now, I'm look at building a possible windows 11 computer. Going with AMD yet again, but I'm a newbie when it comes to AMD. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sVJMht Edit: Main worry, is the cpu, and if I need to buy a different cpu just to update the bios to support the newer cpu.
