I am considering getting a Dolby Atmos soundbar. I have limited space and budget, and I have read good reviews on several models that meet my value/price ratio. Specifically, I'm looking at the LG SN7Y. I also have a 5 year old LG TV. It supports HDMI ARC and optical out, and Dolby Vision (and earlier version, not supported by Xbox). I also have an Xbox One X, an older Roku Ultra, and a Switch. So here's my question... Can I get Atmos to work by using the optical passthru from the TV to the soundbar? I have read that devices must be plugged directly into the soundbar for Atmos tow work, and that wouldn't be much of an issue beca…

HiSense 65U8G and VIZIO SB46514-F6

Hisense ULED Premium 65" U8G Quantum Series (65U8G, 2021 Model) VIZIO SB46514-F6 46" 5.1.4 Premium Home Theater Sound System. I have to say this is one of the best pictures on a TV that I've seen and combined with the Vizio surround sound system, it is pretty nice for movies and streaming. HDR Vision/HDR 10/HDR 10+/IMAX Enhanced are all breathtaking. Cable TV, well, depending on how the show/sporting event was recorded, it can be so-so to pretty good. I got this to stream as I will be cutting the cord at some point. I probably could have gotten a better TV for hundreds more, but I'm happy with it. The sound from the Vizio system is pretty hot …

Onkyo HT-R494 Audio stops working once a year

I bought this set https://eu.onkyo.com/nl-NL/solr-hide/ht-s5805-b/p/157320 I think back in 2017 and at least once a year I will go to watch something and there will be no audio. The first time it happened I thought it was broken I checked the cables and everything and I finally found some post online somewhere about the same thing happening and a "reset" fixing it, so that's what I did. This set is hooked up to everything, so my Xbox One X, Nvidia Shield Pro, Cable Media box etc and I use it almost daily, so it's really annoying. Anyway now tomorrow I will have to go through the manual and calibrate the speaker distance and also find out how to re-…

Hi, we are finalizing the purchase of a home, the current owner said that they would take with them all the speakers, projector, projector mount and projector screen in the theater room and patch up all the holes. I am very new to theater room installation and need some help from you guys in terms of deciding how much effort/cost it will be for me to install my own setup on what is left in this theater room in our new home. We are open to hiring professionals but would like to know whether it will be more economical for us just to buy all the setup from the current owner. Thanks.

Should I upgrade my AV Receiver?

I have the Onkyo TX-NR509 5.1 AV Receiver which I've own for about 10 years now. For over 5 years, I've had random audio dropouts with this receiver when using the HDMI ports. And here's the funny thing, it happens once in a blue moon... maybe once every 6 months or so. That's how rare it is. And in the over 5 years it has been happening, it hasn't gotten worse. Truth be told, deep down inside, I've hoping that it does get worse so it gives me a reason to upgrade to a 4K AVR, but it still only happens rarely. I've switched to different cables, different ports and even upgraded to a 4K TV a couple of years ago, and the dropouts still occur. So, it's obvious that the proble…

It's amazing that on Vudu, GoogePlay and ITunes, they always have a lot of 4K movies on sale that you can buy for as low as $5. And it's great because most 4K TVs are smart TVs so everyone is set up to watch them. However with 4K Blu-ray, they are still about $30 a movie. Maybe $20 if you're lucky. And not to mention you still have to spend another $200 for a player. So why are 4K Blu-rays still so expensive? Why don't they drop in price like digital movies are?

Surround Sound System
by techbeck- 11 replies

So, currently I have about a 20yr old Sony surround sound system. Still works great but looking for something newer, possibly. What I have is, not exact model but close enough, https://www.crutchfield.com/S-KDH3TK6fNSc/p_158HDX275/Sony-DAV-HDX275.html So looking for an all in one and was looking for recommendations. Really do not care about the DISC changer or it to have a DISC drive at all as I play everything through my xbox. Need to be able to play anything on my TV through the new system. Not looking to spend a bunch of money. I think I spent $400 for my current system about 20yrs ago or so. Recommendations? Thanks

Sometime recently a new update was pushed to the Xbox One which has again broken the Plex app to which it constantly buffers direct streams. Shamelessly copied from here while looking for a solution it seems that the Kodi app does a far better job: Install Kodi on your Xbox One Launch Kodi, goto addons; search for Plex and install Plex Run Plex Addon In Plex settings enable X265 In Plex settings set remote quality to original Set Plex addon to run at Kodi startup. The only drawback is that it does not support HDR mode switching, which is why I am finally done with messing around with Plex on the Xbox and I'm now orderi…

I currently have a Chromecast, which supports 1080p only. I recently bought a Hisense H65A6250UK TV (2019 model) and despite what you read on the Internet or in the manual, it is not fully DLNA-compliant and does not connect from mine (Huawei P30 Pro) or my partner's (Google Pixel 2 XL) phones. I do not wish to pursue this avenue any further; I have spend a lot of time online (mainly in forums) trying to diagnose it and it's not possible to solve. I am wanting to upgrade to a 4K streamer that supports Dolby Vision (as that's what Netflix uses). I will only use the device to cast Plex, YouTube, Plex etc. from my Android phone. …

Anyone have experience with Audioengine speakers?
by Steven P.- 0 replies

My Creative Soundworks THX 2.1 250D desktop speaker system is getting on a bit now and I am looking for viable alternatives. I am not familiar with audio drivers that negate the need for a subwoofer and am just wondering if anyone here has experience with them. What I like about my Cambridge Soundworks system is that it is digital coax, not analogue which makes a noticeable difference with louder music playback (no distortion at all). When I upgraded my PC I had to use them over analogue jack until I got a card with digital out and the difference was quite noticeable through the same speaker set! Here's the website https://audioengineusa.com/shop/p…

Do I need a Chromecast Ultra?
by Elliot B.- 5 replies

I currently have a 2nd-generation Chromecast, which is 1080p only. I recently bought a new 65" 4K TV and, due to the size compared to my previous 48" 4K TV, 1080p content is beginning to look quite poor on it. I now have some 4K Blu-ray Disc rips on my home Plex server. Should I pay £54 for a Chromecast Ultra from Google's store (they're normally £69) or should I just cast to the TV directly?

Plex Player Device Recommendations
by Circaflex- 6 replies

Curious what everyone is using for Plex playback. I have a nVidia shield, but the ethernet port is going bad, or that is what nVidia is telling me and I am well out of warranty (3 years old) which still is crummy because for the price these devices cost, you would think the nic would last beyond 3 years. nVidia also claims it isn't a recent firmware bug, although other users have reported their link speed being limited to 100mbps and not receiving 1000mbps like the device is capable of. I've replaced my cables just to be sure, removed my 2 10/100 devices (hue bridge and a security camera) just to be sure and this thing wont connect at 1000mbps. I was told by nVidia it is …

Are Harmony remotes worth it?
by DaDude- 20 replies
- 5.3k views
I have quite a bit of electronics in my living room (TV, DVD player, DVD recorder, Blu-ray player and a receiver) and obviously, it's crazy to have five separate remotes in order to control each one of them. So, I use a standard universal remote, but it has such limitations. I've heard that Harmony remotes are good and can do pretty much anything you want with almost any electronic out there. I see this listed at Best Buy's website for $50: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/logitech-harmony-665-10-device-universal-remote-black/5852832 Is it worth the $50 to invest in a remote like this? It will be great if I can buy a remote and can control all five of my devices with th…

Good 4K TV options anyone?

in '14, we bought a Samsung 46" 3D TV - over this time, the screen has been replaced 3 times. Once every year just about -the back lights on it are burning out fast. Then, the HDMI stopped processing sound, so I replaced the motherboard on it and Samsung refuses to call it a defective TV (I was out of warranty per them anyway, so MOBO replacement was not an issue for me to do). Then, we had a home theatre 3d Blu-Ray combo which tanked about 1 1/2 years later due to overheating issues, we mostly used it for the sound, as a receiver. I feel very badly burned by Samsung products and given the investment of $700 at the time for the TV, I am not willing to go b…

Is it worth upgrading from a 32" to a 40" TV? 1 2
by DaDude- 45 replies
- 41.9k views
I've had my Samsung 32" 1080p TV for about two and a half years and since I moved to my own apartment last year and Black Friday is now approaching, I was wondering if I should take advantage of the BF deals and try to upgrade to a bigger TV. Given my current layout in my living room, I have just enough room to fit a 40" TV. If I get something bigger, it would require me to redo the layout of my living room and move furniture around in order to accommodate the extra room that the big TV would take. Not to mention that it's harder to transport an over 40" TV from the store to my apartment, which would force me to have my TV delivered and thus, mishandled by people. So, …

Moving Home, New Setup, Apple Tv? 1 2
by BGM- 30 replies

Hi, My old Samsung le40m87bf that i have had for almost 12 years is finally on deaths door, and as we are moving house i figured i would finally upgrade it. Also as we mostly watch Tv thought the Xbox One these days (due to the TVs age, and it not supporting Smart Tv Apps etc.), but as i don't play Xbox any more due to time constraints thought i would replace that also! So, I was thinking about a new Tv plus an Apple Tv, but don't know if that would a bit daft considering that most (if not all) on demand apps you can now get on the Smart TVs anyway. I'm NOT considering getting and a superbly large Tv (probably only 40" again, but possibly smaller t…

In-wall speakers in pre-wired home
by scumdogmillionaire- 6 replies
- 7.4k views
My home was pre-wired for 5.1 surround, which I would like to put some in-wall speakers in, but I'm kind of confused on how this will work. I've attached a photo from when the house was just framed so you can visualize this easier. You're looking at the center channel up top (cropped the others out). So, they've put these outlet boxes in right on the studs where the wires are coming up through. How do I deal with this with in-wall speakers? do I have to remove these boxes somehow? I've also read that in-walls don't do great right up on the stud? In my case that's where all of these are. Thanks for any help here. I just haven't been able to wrap my head around this.

I have a Xenta VT-S205 1080p upscaling DVD player. It was purchased in December 2013 for £15 from Ebuyer. It hasn't been used in many years. I plugged it in today (via. several different HDMI cables) into a Samsung UE46ES5500 TV (a 2012 model). I've also tried two other HD TVs. All DVDs appear extremely pixelated. As in, below the standard DVD-Video resolution of 576p. They appear to be playing in half resolution. There aren't many settings to change but those that do exist are all set correctly: Aspect Radio: 16:9 View Mode: Original (not Pan & Scan or Zoom) TV System: PAL (I tried NTSC, just in …

Hi Everyone I am moving to a new house. It has been almost 7 years since my last purchase of home theater. the old amp is huge and completely outdated / unnecessary. the living room area is connected to the dining area and the kitchen. There is a space for TV in the middle and that is the only thing that I am bringing from my old apartment. I would like a cool modern audio setup! Preferably some wireless ( at least satellite speakers) Some sort of connected system with an android app would be nice. If some speaker can go to the bedrooms upstairs that connect to the main system and stream from it other …
