I have two Sony woofers from my old Hi-Fi System. Now these are very old speakers with only wires and no connectors. My TV only has digital optical out. So there anything I can do to connect these two beasts to my TV??? They have been lying around for a while and want to be able to do something with it.

VCR Video Flickering on and off
by Brandon- 6 replies
- 7.3k views
Long story short, our old rear projector HDTV finally died. We ordered a 55" LG LCD TV that will be here tomorrow and are using the 32" LCD tv from my bedroom for the time being. We cleaned up the wiring as the new TV actually supports HDMI (yay!) Anyways, one thing we can't get to work is our old VCR. The video keeps flickering in and out (Audio remains fine). The video will play for 30 seconds, flicker off, and back on again. Does this with every video. Tried another VCR we had in the basement -- same thing We have the VCR going into our reciever via the composite (red/white/yellow) which is hooked up to our TV via component (green, blue, red). Everything else works…

Hey guys, I am planning to buy a 42" LCD TV. After some research, I have narrowed it down to the 42" LG LE5500. Along with this the LG BD550 Network Blu-Ray player and a Tata Sky HD connection comes bundled. So its basically LG 42" LE5500 LG BD550 Blu-Ray player TataSky HD (Which I plan to bump up to TataSky HD+) The total cost will come around Rs 65k.(approx $1470) I am a novice in this field so would like some inputs on my choice. Thanks

New HDTV, Plasma vs LCD?
by Brandon- 7 replies
- 2.9k views
So my parent's 10 year old Mitsubishi rear projecting HDTV finally broke. with a $400 quote to fix it, they'd rather dump it on Craig's List and get a new one. They are looking at 55-60" sets, midrange, so around $1,300-1,600. Obviously, not buying at Best Buy, so prices should be cheaper online. I've always had gotten LCD tv's as I don't have room for anything bigger than 37" really and I remember that with the older plasmas, you had a huge issue with burn in. I know the new plasmas are better, and LED LCDs are also good... but more expensive. Thoughts?

Want to get a projector - any tips?

Hi guys, I want to get a projector for my living room Today I saw a good BenQ one, with a silent fan going for around $850 - I'm in Switzerland Next week I'm going to Chicago and want to see in BestBuy and places if I can find something good and cheaper in the US - any recommendations? I don't know what makes a good quality projector but my main use will be basically having it connected/running from my iMac/Macbook Pro so I can watch movies from my computer straight fed to the projector to watch on the wall Any tips?

Remote control help
by StealMySoda- 0 replies
- 1.1k views
So I've picked up a remote to go with my new media center. I'm going to be using it with XBMC and windows media center 'for now'. I've got basic function at the moment. Up down left right select back etc etc. in both applications. And I can close both, and launch WMC from the desktop. I can't however launch XBMC from desktop with the remote (unless I switch to mouse mode and launch that way), I also can't use the handy video/music/picture buttons in xbmc to switch between categories. I've found app (ghost) I think it was called, but it confused me a little. Is there a simpler app to do what I want to accomplish? Any help would be appreciated :p having the mouse and …

Apple TV or Roku?
by nerdo2- 5 replies

Hello all! I, along with a lot of other people, am stricken with a question - Roku or Apple TV? After comcast decided to kick me off of most of my channels, I have been searching for an easy way to watch tv via the internet (without having to repeatedly plug in my laptop or buy an htpc). I love the price of the cheapest Roku - only $59! I'm also a big fan of all the channels and the sdk (although no youtube  ). And I like the fact that Apple TV works off itunes. In terms of functionality, I really don't need/want the ability to stream music/pics to my tv. My network is not the greatest streaming network, but I'm fine with the wait of a slow internet. My largest …

Is a 3D TV really worth it?
by +Mystic- 20 replies
- 4.8k views
I am looking at purchasing a Samsung or Sony 55" TV at the end of the summer. Currently I'm still trying to justify if the upgrade to 3D is worth the cost. With Time Warner Cable, I don't see them upgrading to 3D in the near future. I also don't have a 3D computer monitor for 3D PC gaming, and I have an Xbox 360 so no 3D gaming there as well. So I really would have zero 3D content to watch for a few years. What I've been hearing all across the Internet though is that the processing components are better designed in 3D TV's (obviously) so that should result in a better picture apparently. Anybody out there recently buy a large TV and didn't go with 3D?

Cant get Receiver to show Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD
by jerzdawg- 0 replies
- 1.2k views
Ok - as the title states I cannot get my Onyko TX-SR606 to show the TrueHD or DTS-HD indicator no matter what. I originally had an old ps3 hooked up to it which was unable to pass the signal over (used PCM instead). I am now using a Sony BDP-S470 which i would imagine should be able to send the signal to the receiver. Is it some sort of setting I need to change in the bluray player settings (currently default settings)? Thanks. I think i might have found the problem - apparently there is an option in the bluray player to have the BD Audio MIX when there is a secondary audio (like the commentary), I rarely listen to these so I will just turn the option off.

Ok, my mom wants a cheap streamer for local media like I use for all my media on my home server. Which would be better for a person that knows nothing about tech stuff after I set it up for her: 1. Apple TV 2 jailbroken with xbmc 2. Roku XDS with local streaming channel If anyone here has had any experience with either box, please share your experience with it. Thanks in advance

8x2 HDMI Matrix Switch

Hope this is the right place to post this. Been looking for just a basic (ie: no video and/or audio processing) 8x2 HDMI Matrix Switch (8 HDMI Inputs / 2 HDMI Outputs) I paid only $170AU for my 4x2, but finding a reasonable price 8x2 seems to be impossible ($1600+ is a joke and way out of my price range). I've searched and searched but can't seem to finding anything. Is this just a pipe dream or does something exist?

HTPC using Linux
by Daninku- 16 replies
- 5.2k views
It's not the first time I have used Linux. I have used Knoppix, Ubuntu and Fedora. My main OS is OS X (MacBook Pro), I also use XP in a virtual machine (on the same Macbook) and currently have Windows 7 installed on a PC. However I find the Microsoft's OS to be really unstable compared to both the MAC OS and the Linux distros I've used. What I want to do is have the PC dual boot Windows (as I'm an IT student and I would need Windows at some point in time) and Linux. Don't really like Windows Media Centre, and I would like to use Linux in order to build a home theatre system the way I want. Of the distros mentioned earlier, my favourite was Fedora, however I would li…

Possible Problem with HDTV
by SaltLife- 6 replies

Hey guys, I'm having a concern with my newly purchased plasma HDTV. The model number is PN50C680 by Samsung. So, I've owned the set now for roughly a week and I have been playing the 'break-in' slides as suggested by some other owners. The slides basically run through a series of colored slides. However, I've noticed that on the gray gradient slides I see a green tint towards the samsung logo that grows upwards. It is very faint and I do not see it on movies/videos (at least not that I notice). I asked the wife, but she says she doesn't see it. Soooo, before I freak out and return this sucker I thought I would ask you guys or at least someone with some experien…

Analog to Digital Audio?
by +jamesyfx- 0 replies
- 2.1k views
Basically I have a PA System I use for parties and such, and until now It's just been sorta sat in the corner being useless until these parties get started - it just has an analog output (Twin Phono). So I was thinking I could hook it up to my tv while it's doing nothing. I've connected it to my TV via a Sky+HD box - that has analog input so that isn't a problem. However, my PS3 only has Optical. I'm assuming there is some sort of 'box' I'll need to convert the analog signal to a digital one with an optical output. I'm also assuming it's going to be quite expensive. Am I on the right track here or is there a better way? I could just buy a digital audio system but if tha…
