Over asked question, I'm sure but were thinking of replacing the audio systems we have in two of the rooms in this house with newer equipment, and were looking for suggestions. One room (that I'm in right now): Is probably around 17" by 21" Has a fireplace in it . . . . which is surrounded mostly by brick Will most likely get (A new TV) Has several windows: two large windows (a lot of glass) to the left of me, a different window in front of me is much narrower but taller. The others are of in doors () with glass to the right (& or left) of the doors. The current speakers are Advent floor speakers (~32" high) And a Teac receiver (it's mostly this that should be rep…

Apple TV is a rip-off in Canada 1 2
by Xtreme $niper- 29 replies
- 9.4k views
I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this, but I took the time today (I was slightly bored) to load up the Apple TV product page on both Apple.com and Apple.ca. Put side by side, you'll notice some differences... The Canadian version of Apple TV ... - is $20 more expensive - does not support "HD TV Shows" - does not support Netflix I don't know about you, but I'm not entirely convinced about this device right about now. I know Netflix is not in Canada yet but they had announced a few months ago that they would be launching here in the Fall. But if Apple isn't even going to bother touting that as a "coming soon" feature, then what if they aren't even going to imple…

What would the best TV for this room be? Should be at lest 43+ inches (less than 50 though). What to consider: Most likely going to be used for gaming (Wii, PS3, possibly Xbox 360 (if Kinect gets a good tennis game) Because it'd have a PS3 connected, it'd may see some DVD (netflixs or otherwise)/blue ray use. Possible Netflix (PS3, Wii, or the TV it self) Most likely going under a fireplace mantel, IN FRONT of a fireplace. Though the fireplace doesn't get used that much My personal preference would be a LED & a Sony. As a LED is lighter and thinner than a LCD, and if we have to use the fireplace we can just move the TV onto the carpet (might be on a stand). And …

The setup I would like is this: Using an HDMI splitter I would like to send one signal from a device to my receiver in the living room and one to a receiver in the conservatory. The requirement will be that they are synced and outputting the same audio at the same rate in both rooms. Is this possible or is there likely to be considerable enough lag? Cheers, Alex

I have two Blu-ray players in my house -- one a pretty good Sony (not sure of the model number), and the other a top-of-the-line Insignia (my brother works at Best Buy so he got a good deal on it; I know it's not as good as most of the name brand stuff). But it seems that on both I consistently get issues with Blu-ray discs I rent from Netflix. And the majority of these discs have been used barely at all (some of them are even brand new!). Movies will take an abnormally long amount of time to load (yes, I know BD takes longer to load than DVD, but it shouldn't take this long), and sometimes a movie will run great, but then get to one part and just flat-out stop and no l…

DvD Player
by Slane- 0 replies
- 1.3k views
So I've been using my 360 to play DvD's, which is great, but seeing how stuff is coming out on Blu-Ray, I really want to get one. The only thing that's been holding me back, is that there a several movies/tv shows that are different regions I would like to purchase and watch. Which means I need a region free DVD Player and when I search for one, I never like the results I get or the results I get are stupidly expensive ($500). So I'm wondering if anyone else has been the in the same boat I am in and find a DVD/Blu-Ray player that you could either unlock after purchase or was already unlocked at time of purchase. So I can start enjoying shows from across the pond without …

Living room audio solution
by EmpyreanUK- 7 replies

I recently moved out of shared accommodation and into a flat of my own, meaning that I now have a living room. I've got my TV set up in there (a Sony KDL32v5500) and my PS3, but as yet I don't have any means to play music beyond a small iPod dock. I've considered investing in a 5.1 surround sound system to plug into my TV and PS3, with the intention of also playing music through it, either via streaming it from my laptop to the PS3 or by means of connecting my iPod to it. I did also consider, however, that a 2.1 system might be all that I need. I am a big movie fan, but most of the films I own are pretty old (my favourite genre is film noir, and one of my favourite indiv…

HTPC Build Options
by +longgonebn- 2 replies
- 1.8k views
I am tired of streaming my content to my PS3 and other devices with PS3 Media Server (audio not working on most files now, no updates) and Tversity (color issues on most new files). Any set-top box that I buy will probably have similar issues or will one day because they aren't updated. So the best solution, plug a computer into my tv. I don't really want to build anything though, very lazy. Are there any HTPCs out there under 300CAD? Any other ideas, suggestions? Thanks.

Movies on my laptop
by NikBrooks- 4 replies

Ok, so I think my hard drive at the moment is 90% movies. I didn't intend on it getting this clogged up but anyway... I'm looking to free up the space on my hard drive, while still being able to access my movies. I've got an Xbox 360 to stream most of them, but some of them have codecs that the 360 doesn't support. Currently I'm using the 360 if and when I can, but sometimes I have to use the TV as my laptop monitor and watch the movie like that when the codecs aren't supported. So my question is, which is the best way to tackle both problems? How easy is it to set up a server to use with my TV or something like that? I've never really looked into this so any advice i…

No Sound From XBOX 360 Using HDMI from Surround System

TV: Pioneer PDP-5080HD Receiver: Denon AVR-1508 5.1 Speaker System XBox 360 w/ HDMI Ports How I Currently Have it Wired XBox 360 HDMI > TV HDMI Input 7 TV Optical Out > Receiver Optical In 5.1 Speaker System > Receiver When I watch TV, I can hear the sound coming out of my 5.1 Speaker System. However, once I switch to XBox 360 input I lose sound out of the surround system but I do hear sound from the TV's speakers. I have no idea why and this is very frustrating. I was using another plasma TV before and everything was working fine. Now that I've switched, it doesn't work anymore. Any ideas please? Thanks

Hi guys, I have a Sony HT setup which includes the 5.1 speaker system as well as a slimline AV receiver. It's a great little setup, the only problem is the general lack of output options. What I was wondering is whether there is such a device which would interrupt the speaker cable and either split it physically, or better still wirelessly to another room in the house. Cheers for any help guys, Alex

TV Lift Cabinets
by Konstanov- 2 replies

Does anyone here at Neowin happen to own a TV Lift Cabinet? I'm tired of the clutter that I look at every time I look at the living room or my bedroom in the section of the room where the TV happens to be. A mismatched array of electronics that clash with each other that are the only tacky thing in my house and I am now looking at two different TV Lift Cabinet models from Cabinet Tronix and was wondering if anyone here at Neowin had purchased a TV Lift Cabinet or perhaps even a Cabinet from this company and could give praise or criticism towards the product? If anyone was wondering, I was looking at purchasing the Titan for the bedroom and the Le Bloc Buffet for the livi…

Projector Idea
by daftperception- 4 replies
- 1.8k views
Would it make sense to buy both an hd and sd projector. My reasoning is that by watching sd content on an sd projector I could save the lamp life of my hd projector. I am a heavy movie watcher and most of what I watch is only available in sd(mst3k,older movies, etc). The difference in lamp replacements costs between the 2 is huge. Or is it smarter to just replace lamps as they burn out on the hd projector. Thanks

Just a quick question: What is the best for large TV's (42" and up)? LED LCD or plasma? I have a 3 year old 42" plasma Panasonic but I've been told that LCD LED is now better???? (that confused me) Also what is AMOLED? is that a more advanced LED LCD?

Hissing sound from Technics DV-250
by DrewJW- 3 replies
- 1.9k views
Hi all, I have recently purchased a Technics DV-250, and while it is in mint conditions, when no music/audio is playing their is a audible "hissing" sound coming from the speakers, this does increase as per the volume, but remains even with volume on minimum. While not very annoying I am concerned. Anyone any idea what this is, and if it requires a repair?
