Recommendations for photo prints and/or photo books with excellent quality, but reasonable cost?
by JayZJay- 4 replies
Hi, everyone. I'm looking for recommendations of a company or two for photo prints and/or photo books with excellent quality, but reasonable cost. I'm in the United States. I'm sure there are probably quite a few options, but maybe there are 2 or 3 companies that stand out as the best. I see some Groupon deals on photo books from Collage.com and Shutterfly.com, but I don't know what opinions are on either of them. Thanks in advance for any feedback and/or recommendations. -JayZJay

Looking for new tripod

So after ages of using generics and losing backplates, i've owned, two of theses generic: http://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Samsung-Panasonic-eCost-Microfiber/dp/B00J8RM35Q/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428330222&sr=1-6&keywords=tripod Not that exact same model, but just so you get the idea. Ken rockwell swears by this one (though I normally dislike any of his recommendations, this does seem to be "sane"). http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D60LG8/ My max budget would be around $100. The weight is a D600 (1lb ish) plus 50mm and 85mm small prime lens, so tops 3 lb. I don't do much of tripod shooting, but I have my…

Memory Cards for New Camera
by Sir Topham Hatt- 4 replies

I traded in my D60 for the D7100 yesterday, and had a few minutes setting up the camera and looking at the menus. I put in my 8Gb SD card, which would normally fit about 450 photos on it. Generally, I would never see it pass more than about 200 photos at any one time, but with a honeymoon coming up, I don't want to get caught short. The camera proudly displays that only 141 will fir on the original 8GB card. So I have looked to purchase two 32Gb cards. I just went for the most popular on Amazon which is the Transcend 32GB Premium SDHC Class 10 UHS-I 300x Memory Card. A sure upgrade to the 8Gb class 4 card I currently have. But with the advent of using vide…

[GoPro] Backpack for 3rd party battery
by +Dick Montage- 1 reply

Hi I use my GoPro a LOT when on holiday. I have the original battery as well as 3 Wasabi Power batteries (they are darned good 3rd party ones). When power runs out, I swap the battery. Simples. I have looked at the official backpack battery, which adds a fair amount of bulk, but also a fair amount of power. Great. But I was wondering if there's a 3rd party backpack that would take a replacement battery? So I could pop my Wasabi battery into the main GoPro unit, and one into the backpack, basically giving me an extensible backpack option. Thanks

i was looking over my Nikon D3200, and noticed a sort of switch? button??, it's right next to the lens on the actual camera. hard to take a picture of with only 1 camera! and hard to find a picture of it online. but i managed to find 2 that i have highlighted. on mine it sticks outwards, and when you look at it from the side it doesn't look like the lens touch's it at all.

Thinking of buying a D7100 but must decide today / tomorrow

I don't really want to afford a new camera as I have a wedding to pay for, but I think I could squeeze some spare cash. So here's some info: I currently have a D60, which sees not much use, but when it is used, we take a good amount of photos and love the quality of the images we get. I've just got an iPhone 6, which compared with my old Lumia 920, the camera is awful, so not great for taking photos. We're going away on our honeymoon in June. Nikon have a deal on to get a free MB-D15 battery grip (with about

Hi, In about a week, I'm going to have a shooting where the plan is to recreate movie posters and popular pictures featuring Scarlett Johannsson with a model who looks a bit like her. Thing is, I'm going to work with a friend (photographer, not model) to learn from each other during the shooting itself and later on in Photoshop. This shooting will be TFCD based, so no money involved whatsoever. Now, two questions: First, any suggestions as to which pictures we should recreate? We have about a dozen so far but we're still looking for inspiration. Second, I'm wondering if I'm going to run into copyright issues if I put the pics online. I mean Scarlett won't be on …

50MP Canon EOS 5DS and 5DS R offer maxed-out resolution
by Draconian Guppy- 19 replies
- 3.4k views
Man my pc can barely handle 24mp without a fart or two After sticking with ~20MP for more than seven years, Canon has unveiled the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R, both of which offer 50.6MP full-frame sensors inside virtually the same body as the EOS 5D Mark III. The effect of the EOS 5DS R's low pass filter has been cancelled out for greater detail resolution, but aside from that difference the two cameras are identical. Like the EOS 5D III the new cameras offer 1080/30p video but do not feature headphone jacks or clean HDMI out. Each uses dual DIGIC 6 processors, a 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points and a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with 252 zones. T…

Pentax K-50 for my first camera
by Meko Mimi- 6 replies

I'll be buying my first DSLR this week after I receive my bonus. My eyes are set over the Pentax K-50 for P24,999 ($555). Actually, I was going for the Canon 700D or Nikon D5200 which is around $622 but due to budget, I have to spend lesser for the DSLR Anyway, Pentax K-50 has many nice feature. - Weather-Sealed Body and Lens - 11 AF Points, 9 Cross Types - 51200 Max ISO and 6000 Max Shutter Speed - Focus Peaking (As I understand, you can check what your camera is focusing by scrolling the front dial) - Front and Rear e-Dial - Pentaprims Viewfinder (100% Coverage) - Etc, etc, etc. I don't mind the 16MP sensor, for me it will do a good job. Since this DSLR is the …

This delayed voting thread unfortunately comes bearing bad news in relation to the competition. As of this voting thread, no further competitions will be made, I'm sure it has become clear to you all that the number of entries per month has been slowly drying up and at the point when we get this number of entries over an extended period of two months shows that the interest in this area of the forum really is dying out (when it comes to the actual taking of photos). It is with my deepest regret that I have to discontinue the competition, as I always enjoyed seeing the variety of entries that were posted, and the different directions each member took with the theme…

Looking for New Nikon - Some Advice
by Sir Topham Hatt- 5 replies
I've had my D60 for years now and thought it might be nice to give it an upgrade. The D60 was my first SLR and I've toyed with not bothering with it and getting a nice point and shoot. But then when reviewing the photos, I forget the point and shoot and think back to SLR, more for the quality than anything else. I usually just stick to P mode and let it do it's thing. Occasionally I have set the aperture and flash at speeds I want but generally it's not something I play around with at all. Why Nikon I hear you say? Well here's the kit I have: Flash gun (SB-200) Remote 55 - 200mm lens All Nikon branded (I'm a bit of a brand horse like that). I did…

Just wondering what you guys do to make your HDR photos. I know the gist of how it's done and know of some of the software options, but admittedly I've never done it. The idea of it is fantastic and could really make for some great photos. I'm just wondering what software you guys use, what is your workflow, and do you guys have any tips to making a good HDR image?

Nikon offers 1.5 million Yen in kit and cash as top prize in annual photo contest
by Draconian Guppy- 5 replies

Nikon has opened the doors to entries for the company's annual photo contest, and is offering a top prize of 1m Yen (approx. $9200/?5600/?7100) in equipment with 500,000 Yen cash for the overall top prize. Running since 1969 the competition this year will feature 7 categories including a new 'Home' theme and a 'Generation N' section for 10 entrants aged 19 and under. With themes that include work in video as well as stills, Nikon has for the first time opened the competition to digital images captured on any digital imaging device ? including smartphones, camcorders and medium or large format cameras. Scanners are once again not classed as 'digital devices', so images…

Digital camera equivalance and why you should care
by Draconian Guppy- 1 reply
I'd like to post the whole article here, but because of formatting and photo examples, the article really deserves to be read at source: The concept of 'equivalence*1' is still somewhat controversial and not always clearly understood. We thought it was about time we explained - and demonstrated - what equivalence means and what it doesn't. What is equivalence? Equivalence, at its most simple, is a way of comparing different formats (sensor sizes) on a common basis. This is already the way most lenses are talked about: it's quite common to say that a compact camera includes a '28-120mm lens' but the key and (often unspoken) word in that description is 'equivalent.'…

Matching black and white image to its color counterpart?
by Anthony Tosie- 9 replies
- 2.6k views
A staff member where I work accidentally saved a black and white version of her original image instead of leaving it as the color version it originally was. She has a lower-quality version of the image that's in color, but not the original high-res image in color. Does anyone know if there's an easy way to match the black and white version back to its original state based on the lower-res image's levels or anything along those lines? It's not a big deal, just trying to help her out if I can.

Idea's to keep Camera safe?
by papercut2008uk- 7 replies

I'm going to be travelling soon abroad and the place I'll be living isn't the safest, I'll be in a house, but thefts are common. so i need some idea's on how to keep my kit safe. it's not like thief central, but there have been thefts in the past, because people sleep outside, with fans running so no one hears anything if someone jumps a wall and decides to take what they want. I've seen for laptops those Laptop slip cases that look like padded envelopes which I'm thinking of getting for my laptop, but I just bought a Nikon D3200 and would really hate for it to get stolen! I'll be getting a camera bag for it, but don't want to keep it in there all the time when it's …
