Personal Cloud/Dropbox Alternative

Recommended Posts

is there such a thing as a 'personal dropbox'?

ie: a distro, maybe, that i can install, dedicate as an NAS, and has a nice web UI that i can access remotely, and possibly with an app like dropbox?

anyone ever heard of such a thing? the closest i can find is Lipsync - http://philcryer.github.com/lipsync/

You can also use FreeNas or Openfiler to create a SMB shared type of drive and then locate it either at a family member's house, friends house or wherever you want it to be for offsite storage (if you are looking for that), and then assign a free DNS address or memorize their IP if theirs never changes, then map your computer to said network share.

I have a similar set up, except local. So, I have my NAS box sitting in the same apartment as my system. I am using it now as a network drive so my Laptop which is Linux based and my Mac can share files and use it as a backup server.

i'm in the process of building a FreeNAS system, but this doesn't give me the functionality i want. i want it to securely share, and transfer files, and have access to a few as i choose. my NAS will not be accessible from the world. i'd like a nice web UI so i could access some files in the share remotely, but mainly for other people that want to see what i've made available to share.

You might also want to consider Windows Home Server. It has an excellent web interface that makes accessing and sharing files simple and even comes with a free domain that simplifies accessing your home network from the internet.

I recently started using expanFS and PureSync with my own VPS server for syncing between my desktop and laptop.

takes a bit of time to setup but it works well :p

Why not use Skydrive?

Yea but if your going to do that then just use dropbox anyway...... I think the OP wants to have unlimited space and not worry about a 3rd party service.

+1

AFAIK Skydrive doesn't auto sync. also, i've had issues with Skydrive in the past where they won't allow certain file types. long story short: too much Microsoft BS for my tastes.

...Among other things. Security is #1. Space is #2. Hosting it myself is the way i'd prefer to go, and i'd also like something cross platform, since i'm a linux user, and other people use windows.

Skydrive doesn't but Windows Live Mesh which is a part of Skydrive does auto-sync.

I dropped Dropbox for SugarSync. Not exactly what you want, but . . .

Several Linux distros are doing "cloud" services.

Might look at these:

http://www.lucid-desktop.org/

http://www.qwikioffice.com/

There used to be another developed by developers from Mandriva, but I think it's gone a different direction. Mainly desktop virtualization.

I just set up a 1TB miniNAS, it does File serving, FTP, bit torrent, and print server in one small box smaller than a VHS tape. I plan to try it out over the next week to see if it totally fits my needs. If So I found my iDisk/Dropbox replacement while keeping my files on my own hardware.
