Windows 10 DHCP Issues

Recommended Posts

Anyone else been having problems with Windows 10 boxes reporting that the "Ethernet has a invalid IP configuration" in the last few days?

Iv'e seen several machines on very different networks have the same problem this week.

It's a certainly a mystery..

no, haven't had any complaints yet. Updated your chipset drivers? Onboard LAN? It could be related....just thought I'd ask....

Yes MS are looking into it, one of the latest MS Kbs seems to have chuffed DHCP.

the fix is to manually set your IP  subnet mask & Default gateway.

Ive had the issue for months, changed to static addressing for the affected lan clients and all is well.

Yes! As a local computer technician, I've had about 10-15 clients ring me about this over the last 48 hours. What a disaster!

The quick solution is to go into Settings > Network and Internet and perform a network reset.

I'm thinking it may be something lurking in the latest update (November) which is only now coming to light as router DHCP leases expire. Needs to be sorted

The solution that worked for me is doing a "Shutdown" while holding the shift key.  This forces the PC (in this case a portable PC) through a complete boot cycle.  I did this after running the following commands :

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Do we know if this is only affecting IP4 and not IP6?

Have a mixed network at home, none have complained so far, but the computers that matter are on the IP6 network

And how many of those people first tried to correct the issue by shutting their computer down and turning it back on? Because neowin members tend to think that nobody is that stupid and everybody restarts their computer by selecting restart and not shut down.

Or just select restart...  same thing.   the reason you have to do that on shutdown if in fact you wanted to choose shutdown instead is because on Windows 10 a shutdown is now a hybrid shutdown combined with hibernation.   shutdown is no longer a shutdown. You want to restart your computer you would select restart instead.

I assist the Help Desk at my job and can tell you when have to tell someone to restart their PC they almost always shut it down (because that's what they do at the end of the day). They have no concept of just "restarting" a PC.

I didn't know that changed... WTF Microsoft? Shutdown should mean "shutdown" aka start everything anew on boot. Turns out this doesn't impact me as I always turn hibernation off on my boxes.

Made a thread all about it, but the moderators locked it. Don't know why .. but they did.

If you are bored you can read 6 pages of members calling people who turn their computer's off when trying to restart it idiots.

The end result is the same, restart or shut down. It won't come back resolved. Tried and tested.

Have to strongly disagree. Obviously, it won't come back resolved by a shutdown, but a restart has resolved it on every computer I've come across.... at least until it happens again.

So you are saying you restarted and the internet still didn't work?

Here in the UK BT Seem to have acknowledged the issue saying they expect a fix from Microsoft later today

This is on their service status page https://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/service_status

incidentally, I found a reboot didn't always clear the problem.

That's right. Have tested a restart on two or three PC's today to no effect.

Might be suffering from a different problem then.
