Microsoft updates Translator app on Android with improved performance and various fixes

Microsoft has updated its Translator app on Android with a range of small but welcome enhancements to improve its usability.

Perhaps the most significant change is the improvement to the app's start-up performance, enabling users to begin translating more quickly. The full release notes for the latest update, version 3.0.165, are listed below:

  • Slow start up time improvements
  • Conversation mode disconnection fixes
  • Improved error messages
  • Other bug fixes

It's worth mentioning that Microsoft Translator isn't the same as Skype Translator, which is integrated into the company's communications platform.

While there is an obvious overlap in functionality between the two products, Microsoft Translator is a standalone app with distinct features such as the ability to 'scan' text using your device's camera (for example, from a street sign or a menu), and get it translated in near-real-time. Translator does use some Skype technology - along with that of "Office, Bing, Internet Explorer as well as partners such as Twitter, Yelp, eBay, WeChat and more", according to the app's Google Play listing.
