Microsoft releases critical security update for Flash on Windows after Patch Tuesday delay

Microsoft has released an unexpected security update for Adobe Flash Player across multiple Windows versions, addressing an issue marked with a 'critical' security rating.

The update comes a week after Microsoft delayed its monthly Patch Tuesday wave of updates, citing an unspecified "last minute issue". The company later announced that the updates that it would have released last week will now be held back until the next Patch Tuesday on March 14.

It appears that Microsoft has judged the Flash issue to be sufficiently serious to require releasing the patch sooner than mid-March, leading to its decision to make the security update available now.

According to the security bulletin on TechNet, the update "resolves vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player when installed on all supported editions of Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016".
