Google can remotely reset Google Wifi and OnHub devices

Google has released a support article regarding the unexpected reset of some Google Wifi and OnHub devices yesterday, on February 23. According to the article, an issue with the Google Accounts engine has affected the devices and caused them to automatically reset to their factory settings.

The affected devices must be set up again and the released article details how to get it done. Also, Google has shared its apologies for the resulting inconvenience. But the interesting side of this incident is that it reveals that the company may be capable of remotely accessing the devices to the point of even wiping them out.

Google hasn't shared any information regarding why those devices were affected this way or if the company can in fact remotely access their settings. But because of the low perception of privacy and fear of surveillance by tech users, which has already prompted Google to create a new My Account hub in 2015, the company risks losing customers' trust due to the questions left open about the devices' owners' privacy.

Finally, the Google Accounts engine issue has also caused users to log out from their Google Accounts in other devices, such as smartphones and desktops. So, if you have also experienced any issue with your Google Account since yesterday, it may be necessary to re-login to it on the affected devices.
