LG finally announces the G6, complete with 'Full Vision' display and dual 13MP rear cameras

There have been so many leaks and teasers about LG's upcoming flagship handset, the G6, that there's almost nothing left that we didn't know about already. Now, the company has finally made the LG G6 official, confirming the specifications and availability details of the handset.

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona, Spain, LG has unveiled its premium G6 handset, which is a successor to last year's G5. The currently known specifications of the G6 include a 5.7-inch "Full Vision" QHD+ display with a rather unique 18:9 aspect ratio which is HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR capable. The company notes that most entertainment content on the Google Play Store already supports the 18:9 aspect ratio, but LG is also adding a "zoom mode" for unsupported content. It also features dual 13MP rear cameras that do not protrude from the device's back.

The G6's "Full Vision" display not only remove the bezels almost completely, it can also be utilized for various UX enhancements and one-handed usability. Additionally, it also features "always on" functionality, to further enhance productivity. The company already showed off the handset's camera capabilities, wide-angle lenses, and imaging software in recent teasers.

Apart from featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, an aluminum body, 3,300mAh battery, a Quad DAC, and a fingerprint scanner, the LG G6 is also resistant to dust and water and boasts a proprietary heat dissipation technology. The device comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and is also the first non-Pixel handset to sport Google Assistant. Furthermore, the company also ensured that customer's safety and maintaining quality standards while developing the smartphone were a priority for it.

It's worth noting that the Quad DAC and 64GB storage variant of the LG G6 is exclusive to South Korea and a few other Asian countries, whereas wireless charging is exclusive to the US - which will be getting the 32GB version of the handset.

The handset appears to be more compact than last year's G5, mainly due to the non-protruding camera. The company emphasized that the focus was on a "bigger display, but not a bigger phone". In terms of physical dimensions, the G6 ends up being 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9mm while tipping the scales at 163g.

LG has announced that the G6 will be available in three color variants, namely Mystic White, Astro Black, and Ice Platinum. The handset will be available for purchase in multiple markets including South Korea soon, but in April 2017 in the US. While LG hasn't unveiled pricing details for specific markets as of yet, customers who purchase the LG G6 will also get $200 worth of in-app content in different games including Temple Run 2, Crossy Road, and more, from the Google Play Store.
