Recommended Posts

A friend of mines Windows 10 machine is receiving the following error dialog box upon boot.

C:\\User\"username"\AppData\Romaing\bb9b32\54094b.049e975

"This files does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

What steps should I take to eliminate this error? How do I find what filetype or extension is trying to use?

Thanks

I highly suggest your friend runs some tools such  RKill, MalwareBytes, and RogueKiller. (Probably some others you could run but those are what I suggest). Typically when there is a file execution attempt in the AppData it means something malicious was trying to run.

100% that is a virus/malware infection. As @Grinch suggested, have your friend run Malwarebytes and remove that file. Sometimes there will be a startup entry that should be deleted and there might even be a scheduled task that they should delete.

Wouldn't hurt to tun CCleaner after removing the virus.

Run the Registry cleaning.

For what exactly? Unless you understand what each key does, there isnt a reason to just run CCleaner. MBAM will find any rogue keys, CCleaner doesn't do that. This isn't the best advice and I really don't recommend people to run those registry cleaners anymore, they break more than they fix and you're saving a whopping few KBs.

CCleaner has helped me remove leftover malware and programs for years.

No it hasn't, sorry to break it to you Hum.

CCleaner can't detect or remove viruses, spyware, or malware. Check out http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus for antivirus software, and  http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware for anti-spyware utilities.

I am not trying to be aggressive, but when you recommend just "running CCleaner," I have to say something. In 2017 this isn't great advice and you must understand what they keys do, that you are deleting. I have seen it time and time again where people completely hose their system after running registry cleaners or optimizers, there just isn't any logical reason to do that anymore. Were talking KB's here, you aren't running out of storage space because of registry keys.
