Qualcomm announces new 'cutting-edge' wearable platform; the Snapdragon Wear 1200

Qualcomm is a name that most people usually associate with the production of smartphone chips only, and perhaps the stranglehold it has in that position of the market. But there are a number of other fields the company is investing in as well, one of which is wearables.

Now, Qualcomm has introduced its Snapdragon Wear 1200 wearable platform, which adds extra capabilities to the existing Wear 1100 and 2100 - the latter is used in numerous devices including the LG Watch Style and Huawei Watch 2 / Watch 2 Classic.

Qualcomm has described the Snapdragon Wear 1200 as a "cutting-edge" platform, which brings increased energy- and cost-efficiency to the wearable platforms, which includes targeted purpose devices as well as fitness trackers.

The Wear 1200 specifically focuses on consumers who demand increased security, smaller size, and longer battery life in their wearables. As such, the new platform caters to the needs of these users by being 79mm² in size, while offering LTE system-on-chip, the ability to add external sensor hubs, and a global multimode M1/NB1/E-GPRS modem with support for 15 global RF bands, among other things.

Pankaj Kedia, senior director of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, had the following to say:

The smart wearables industry continues to grow with prolific innovation across targeted opportunities such as kids, pets, elderly, and fitness. To effectively scale, these opportunities require ultra-low power, highly energy efficient, always connected, and cost-efficient solutions. With the introduction of Snapdragon Wear 1200, we extend our wearables offerings to bring LTE IoT categories M1 and NB1 to connect the next generation of wearable devices and provide an exciting complement to our highly successful Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform for smartwatches.

The platform also includes support for GPS, GLONASS, and low-power geofencing. It also boasts several hardware-based security features, such as Qualcomm Secure Execution Environment, a hardware cyptographic engine and number generator, and TrustZone.

The Snapdragon Wear 1200 is commercially available and shipping today. You can find out more about it by hitting the source link below.
