Droolworthy: AMD reveals the awesome retail packaging for Threadripper

If you've purchased a processor in the past, your new chip would have been packaged in rather uninteresting paper or plastic boxes for the most part. Well, AMD has just revealed the awesome packaging for its upcoming Threadripper processors, and it almost makes it worth buying one just for the casing.

CEO of AMD, Lisa Su has given us a look at the retail packaging for the upcoming processor via Twitter today. The retail box takes the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners, and a large transparent front panel with the AMD Threadripper name emblazoned on it. The panel also serves as a window inside, where the processor lies waiting. However, it does not confirm previous rumors that the processor will come with a liquid cooling solution in the box.

The X399 Threadripper platform was announced earlier this year, and will have two retail options available: the 1920X 12-core version for $799; and the 1950X 16-core unit for $999. These will sit at the top of AMD's Ryzen family; offering the market a wide selection of processors, from the low end right up to the enthusiast level.

Intel recently announced its answer to the Threadripper platform, the X299 Core i9. However, these have significantly higher prices, and according to the latest update to its official price lists have shown that the company is having issues scaling effectively, causing the higher-end units to have slower clock speeds than the cheaper versions. This has caused some speculation that Intel might have rushed the update so that it does not cede any market share to AMD.

The Threadripper platform will launch in August of this year, and OEMs have also announced that their motherboard options should start to show up ahead of launch.
