Hulu launched its live TV streaming service earlier this year with quite a bit of build-up leading to it, but the company limited the service’s availability to only a selection of devices – namely, Apple TV, Xbox One, Chromecast, along with iOS and Android devices.
Although Hulu has since then added Amazon’s Fire TV and the Xbox 360 to its list of supported devices, today the company is bringing the service to a much bigger audience: web browsers on Windows and macOS.
Starting from today, users with supported web browsers – including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox 15 and above, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer 10 and above – will be able to stream the more than fifty channels that Hulu offers on its service, along with its complete library of on-demand content. However, Hulu’s implementation isn’t quite feature-ready just yet – and the company admits to this in its blog post:
To date, we’ve offered Hulu with Live TV on multiple living room and mobile devices, but we know many of you have asked to access our service on your laptops and computers as well. So rather than wait until we’ve finalized our new Web experience, we’re opening up a basic version to Hulu’s live TV plan subscribers so they can stream live TV via their browsers.
Among its missing features, is a lack of ability to switch profiles; for now, only the primary Hulu profile in an account can access the live TV service on the web, which can prove to be quite a headache for families sharing a single account with different profiles for everyone.
Hulu says that it expects the live TV experience on the web to “evolve significantly over the next few months,” with a mention of features like keyboard interaction and responsive pages. Hopefully, the company will prioritize the more pressing issues accordingly, but this could prove to be a good start for users who want to watch live TV on any device in reach.
