Twitter Lite soft-launches in the Philippines

Twitter has soft-launched 'Twitter Lite', an Android app for the Philippines.

Described by the company as "a faster, data-friendly way to see what’s happening in the world right now," the app is designed for unreliable and slow connections. It also takes up less space, requiring only 414KB to install, compared to the regular Twitter app, which currently runs at 13.38MB.

Twitter Lite is basically a web wrapper of the mobile.twitter.com website, with the company even encouraging those who can't install the app to visit the mobile website instead. It also highly resembles the full-fledged Twitter app, albeit without the dark theme available. Aside from sending text tweets, users can include pictures (GIFs too), though, in our own testing, videos are not yet supported. Polls can be created as well.

The app further incorporates a 'Data Saver' feature, which when enabled, will disable loading of all media on the app. Users can opt to see this content by tapping 'Load image' or 'Load video.' It even shows how much data will be used to display them.

Back in June 2015, Facebook launched its own Lite app for the Philippines and India.

Twitter Lite is compatible with devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop and above. It is not yet known if the app will make its way to other countries, but those in the Philippines can now download the app here.
