Entering UEFI (BIOS) firmware on Windows reboot

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm not sure when this was added to Windows, but I just noticed under the Fall Creator's Updates (aka Version 1709 aka Build 16299.15) that Shutdown (filename: shutdown.exe) now has a /fw switch.  Here's what the built-in help (/?) says about it:

/fw Combine with a shutdown option to cause the next boot to go to the firmware user interface.

I tried it on several computers (some ThinkPads, several self-built systems with ASRock and ASUS motherboards, etc.) by running "shutdown /fw /r /t 10" from an elevated Command Prompt and it seemed to work correctly on all of them.

Seems like a convenient option for computers where it's difficult to get into the UEFI (BIOS) firmware.

Hello,

I moved in 2005.  Perhaps we should have arrange a Neowin Southern California meetup?

That is awesome Goretsky. I know there are a few SoCal members, a meetup would be great! Thanks again for the things you share here on Neowin.
