LG G7 to be scrapped, development to start again from scratch

LG Electronics vice chairman Jo Seong-jin has reportedly told the company's mobile division to scrap all development of the G7 smartphone and start again from scratch. The news comes via Korean news outlet The Investor, which adds the new smartphone may now be launched in April, instead of the suspected February or March unveiling.

LG G7 or next flagship phone: What's the story so far?

An exact date hasn't been confirmed just yet though, with an anonymous source telling The Korea Herald that the launch date will be announced around the Lunar New Year holiday which starts on 16 February and lasts for around two weeks.

The source adds that the reason for the G7 being scrapped is because "the company hasn't been able to find a strong selling point" for it. Although it should be noted this is just speculation for now.

The G7 is expected to feature minor upgrades over the G6, such as slimmer bezels and facial recognition technology, so LG may now be looking for a way to make the G7 better than the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9, which is expected to be unveiled at MWC.

LG has already made the announcement that it will no longer be sticking to annual phone launch cycles, although it wasn't clear if that would come into effect immediately, or with the next flagship phone, which would be the follow-up to the V30.

Maybe their sales went in the toilet after they sealed in the battery with the G6.

They lost the only selling point they use to have pre G6 which was to be one of the only phones that still had a removable battery.

I think these companies need to stop worrying about amazing features unless they truly have something groundbreaking. Just refine and improve on what there already is.

What I find odd is the phone was originally planned for Feb/March. Now they scrapped it and will start from scratch but may launch in April? How do you do that? How do you go from a handset that would be essentially complete (hardware wise) to a scrapped, start from scratch device and only lose a month or two?

I saw these reports.  They kind of shot themselves in the foot by introducing the V lineup. They should've combined the V series features into the G series, and gave it their best shot. Their most iconic phone imo was the Nexus 5. Everything else is just boring/uninspiring/unoriginal/plagued with bootloops. LG is the next HTC.

The public have only found out recently that it's been scrapped, but the actual decision may have happened months ago, unless I missed something in the article.

Better yet, stop with yearly releases.

We have gotten to the point that there's little improvement YoY. Sure, a slightly faster processor or a little better camera, but these don't really warrant a new phone.

Then you get manufacturers like LG and Motorola having those stupid accessories (cameras, speakers etc) that are expensive and good only for that one phone. If you're not going to support it for a few years, then don't bother releasing it.

Good point. I suppose that would mean the scrapped it shortly after starting and if they didn't have some strong selling point, what happened in those couple of months to change that?  Guess we need to wait and see.

At least from an Android point of view, I'd prefer to see them really nail the software and push for more frequent releases to keep it up to date.

The V lineup was support for be there "Samsung Active" lineup. Then they sealed the battery up on the V30 which is disappointing.

I was just playing with my Nexus 5 last night, if they released a full screen phone like the iPhone X and shaped like the N5, I'd stay a loyal customer.
