ProtonVPN app with unlimited usage arrives on Android

The VPN service run by the secure email provider, ProtonMail, has finally arrived on Android. The ProtonVPN app is notably completely free and doesn’t come with restrictive bandwidth limits. Unlike other free VPN apps for Android, ProtonVPN doesn’t contain any advertising and also promises not to sell your browsing data.

In its announcement, ProtonVPN said:

“Since we first launched ProtonVPN in June, we’ve seen an overwhelming response from the community, and today ProtonVPN provides secure Internet for hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Launching ProtonVPN on Android is another major milestone in our journey towards building an Internet that respects privacy and protects civil liberties.”

The Android app supports all of ProtonVPN’s advanced security features including Secure Core, Tor via VPN, as well as connection profiles in order to save your favourite VPN servers. The app requires you to login via your ProtonVPN account, which is free to make, and offers hundreds of VPN servers which can be connected to.

VPNs have grown popular over the last few years, not only due to the Snowden revelations but also due to the increase in public Wi-Fi hotspots. If you connect to a public hotspot without using a VPN there’s a chance that your internet usage could be tracked by malicious parties and also the company hosting the connection.
