Nintendo dedicated the majority of its time at E3 last week to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the latest installment in the famous crossover brawler series. Among the many news related to the game, Nintendo briefly mentioned support for GameCube controllers in the game, showing off a new version of the controller inspired by the franchise.
The new controller is now available for pre-order at Amazon for $29.99, with a placeholder release date of December 31, though it's expected to release alongside the game on December 7. The unit comes in black and has the franchise's logo sitting in the middle, just above the Start button, but you'll also be able to use the original GameCube controllers, which have different colors and don't sport the logo.
The GameCube controller is a fan favorite for playing Super Smash Bros. - so much so that the company added support for the controller to the series' installments on both the Wii and Wii U platforms. While the Wii had dedicated GameCube controller ports in the hardware, the Wii U received support for the devices through a controller adapter and, late last year, it was discovered that Nintendo had added support for that adapter to its Switch console through a firmware update.
The company will be re-releasing the adapter as well, which Amazon lists with a $19.99 price tag, and it will allow players to use four GameCube controllers by using up two USB ports on the console's dock. This means that you won't be able to use the controllers in tabletop mode unless someone finds a way to plug an adapter into the Switch's USB Type-C port.
