New Apple Watch models spotted in second iOS 12 beta, likely coming in September

Shortly after Apple released the second round of iOS 12 beta along with the developer betas of macOS 10.14 Mojave, watchOS 5, and tvOS 12, references to the next-generation Apple Watch were spotted in the operating system's code.

According to a new report by 9to5Mac, the second iOS 12 beta includes identifiers for the Watch4,1, Watch4,2, Watch4,3, and Watch4,4, which are the same naming scheme used for the Apple Watch Series 3 models. The model numbers for the upcoming Apple smartwatches have also been identified as MTUD2, MTUK2, and MTX92, among others.

The report notes that it makes sense for the Apple Watch models to be referenced in iOS, as the smartwatch largely depends on a connection to an iPhone, which also need to know the model it is communicating with. By the same token, it's safe to assume that the upcoming Apple Watch, dubbed the Apple Watch Series 4, will most likely debut in September when the successors to the iPhone 8 and X series, which could see the rumored iPhone X Plus and iPhone SE 2, get announced.

While official specs of the upcoming Apple Watch remain unknown, the smartwatch is rumored to feature next-generation microLED screens built by Apple in-house at a secret facility near its California headquarters.
