Kensington's new dock can (kind of) transform a Surface Pro into a Surface Studio

If you've always felt that the Surface Studio's price point is just a little too high, Kensington may have the closest thing you can get to Microsoft's all-in-one, provided you have a Surface Pro.

The Kensington SD7000 Dual 4K Surface Pro Docking Station allows you to dock your Surface Pro in an office or at home and it features a design that is strikingly similar to the base of the Surface Studio. It also has a series of conveniences to boot: you get four USB Type-A ports, one USB Type-C, a DisplayPort and an HDMI port - both capable of 4K resolutions - an Ethernet adapter, and of course, a Kensington lock port to prevent theft. That's a pretty healthy supply of I/O in a package that looks much nicer than the Surface Dock.

On top of that, the dock has its own magnetic field to lock the Surface Pen in place right next to the Pro, which should help avoid some frustrating scenarios where you don't know where it could have gone.

The base of the SD7000 comes in a platinum color that's similar to Microsoft's color of choice for Surface devices, and the hinge that elevates the Surface Pro has the same colorless reflective finish seen on the Studio, which makes the end result feel like a miniaturized version of the all-in-one.

Kensington is showing off the device at Microsoft Inspire as well as the internal Microsoft Ready event this week, but a release date hasn't been specified. We do know it's expected to cost $299.99 when it launches, with an optional lock module for the Surface Pro costing an extra $29.99.
