A phone with a folding display has been rumored for years, but it looks like Samsung could be readying to introduce its foldable smartphone during CES 2019 and make it available for sale sometime later in the year.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the internal codename for the device is called 'Winner' and features a screen that measures seven inches when measured diagonally. When expanded, the device looks like a small tablet, maximizing screen real estate for the user. When folded, it would resemble a smartphone with a small display on one side, and a camera on the other.
Since the device sounds quite ambitious, it wouldn't receive a typical release like one found with the current Galaxy S or Note line of handsets. Instead, there would be a small initial rollout and, if there is traction, Samsung would roll it out to more markets during the second half of 2019. The company currently has the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note line, the Winner, which could launch as the Galaxy X, could be the start of a completely new line of devices.
While all of this is quite interesting, it's all rumor at this point and the device could change forms or be canceled before its official release. But, if this device does come to market, it could help Samsung reinvigorate its smartphone business, which saw a slight drop in profits this year. With all of the new technology inside the Galaxy X, the phone could come priced at over $1,500. The price tag would make it one of the most expensive smartphones the company has produced to date.
