Corning recently announced its new Gorilla Glass 6 that can withstand up to 15 drops on a hard surface. While more and more handsets are starting to rely on glass for its exterior, the company is looking for new ways to mitigate the negatives that come with a shiny surface like scuffs and smudges.
The firm's new technology will lessen the effect of smudges on its glass by etching a design onto its surface. The new technique won't repel fingerprints on the glass, but it will make them less noticeable. Although hiding smudges is a good thing, another benefit to the custom etching is that it will provide the surface with better grip.
The technology isn't strictly limited to the uses above and can also be used to print customized images. Taking things a step further, the etching can even reproduce textures. It is currently being used on a couple of laptops but has yet to find its way onto a smartphone. That isn't because it's not ready for prime time but because Corning hasn't figured out how it would roll it out and how much it would charge companies to take advantage of its Vibrant Satin Corning Gorilla Glass.
