Many people remember the Galaxy Note7 fiasco almost two years ago, which prompted Samsung to recall the device after numerous reports of the unit "exploding". While the unfortunate event also cost Samsung a lot of money, it also encouraged device manufacturers to extensively test their products in a variety of situations and environments before rolling them out to the public.
While reports of similar incidents with other devices have been isolated since then, Apple has now come into the cross hairs with reports that an iPad has exploded in an Apple store.
The BBC reports that on the afternoon of August 19, an iPad exploded in Apple's Amsterdam retail store. This lead to the evacuation of the shop with the local fire brigade taking over the situation. The Dutch media also says that initially Apple staff tried to deal with the problem by putting it in a sand bucket, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to handle the situation.
The shop was reopened after roughly 45 minutes during which three Apple employees were treated for breathing problems due to inhaling fumes emitted by the iPad.
It's currently unclear exactly what were the specifications of the iPad in question, and what led it to explode. It's highly likely that this incident occurred due to a faulty battery that may be overheating or leaking but Apple hasn't officially confirmed this as of yet. We have reached out to the company for details and clarification regarding the unfortunate incident and will update when we hear back.
