Qualcomm is reported to be changing up its naming strategy with the release of its next flagship SoC, which will likely be called the Snapdragon 855. The chipset will also be manufactured on a new 7nm process, with a speed boost to boot.
Leaked benchmarks believed to have been captured using a device powered by the new chip show it possessing an impressive lead over both its predecessor and its competition in the Android space. The phone's AnTuTu score of 362,292 is the highest ever recorded on an Android device, and is also 16% higher than that achieved by the Mate 20 Pro and its Kirin 980 chipset, also made using a 7nm process. The phone also compares favourably to the current flagship from Qualcomm, with a 20% boost in performance compared to the Snapdragon 845.
Alongside improved performance, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 will also be capable of supporting 5G networks, as a prior announcement from the company indicates that the chipset "can be paired" with an X50 modem capable of 5G speeds. It will likely also have a neural processing unit for AI functionality, much like the Kirin 980 and Kirin 970 before it.
Based on previous precedent, Qualcomm will most probably reveal its latest silicon sometime in December, with Samsung's Galaxy S series phones announced at MWC 2019 likely among the first devices to support it.
