LG confirms the G8 ThinQ will feature an OLED screen that doubles as a speaker

LG Electronics was rumored earlier last month to be working on a sound-producing display for its upcoming G8 ThinQ smartphone. Today, the South Korean tech company has confirmed that speculation by announcing that its next flagship device will feature the Crystal Sound OLED (CSO) technology.

CSO was showcased in April 2018 as a new product capable of producing light and sound through vibration by using the entire OLED display as a diaphragm. LG also demonstrated a TV display featuring that technology during CES 2018. Now, it's bringing CSO to the LG G8 ThinQ, which will officially debut at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 later this month.

Of course, the device will retain a bottom speaker that can work with the top part of the display for a two-channel stereo sound. Additionally, there's still the Hi-Fi Quad DAC for good sound reproduction. That feature was lost on the G6 in several markets, though it was brought back to the limelight with the unveiling of the LG V30 in 2017.

Other audio capabilities of the G8 ThinQ are the Boombox Speaker for producing supposedly "amazing" bass using the phone's internal space and the DTS:X 3D Surround Sound for mimicking a 7.1-channel system even with no earphones. The audio capabilities are courtesy of LG's collaboration with Meridian.

Today's announcement is part of LG's preparation for the upcoming MWC, with the company having recently confirmed that the G8 ThinQ will also have a 3D-sensing camera on the front.
