Google Pay is coming to eBay as a payment option beginning in April

Since parting ways with PayPal in 2015, eBay has been drifting away from its reliance on the online payments provider and has since expanded the payment options for customers. Early last year, the online auction site tapped Amsterdam-based Adyen to manage its payments system, although PayPal remains an option for making payments until 2023 as part of an existing contract.

eBay further expanded its payment options for U.S. customers with the addition of Apple Pay in the fall of 2018. Now, users of the site will have more choices for checking out their orders as eBay announced today that Google Pay is coming to the platform in April, starting with its Android app.

The new feature will also be available on eBay's mobile web and desktop versions at a later date. However, it's important to note that Google Pay users can only use that option when they purchase from sellers enrolled in eBay's new managed payments experience announced last year.

Alyssa Cutright, Vice President of Global Payments, Billing and Risk at eBay, said:

“Google Pay provides users with a fast, simple and secure way to pay online. Offering Google Pay as a form of payment is another significant step toward providing our customers with more choice in their payment options, and creating an experience that is tailored to personal preferences.”

The company stated that its new experience is designed to help shoppers make payments without exiting the platform, regardless of which payment method they use. By 2021, eBay expects to process most of the checkouts on its marketplace with its new managed payments system.
