Apple launches Apple News+, a subscription service for magazines and newspapers

Today, at its special event, Apple launched Apple News+, a paid subscription which will bring over 300 magazines to the service, including TIME, National Geographic, Billboard, and many more. Apple highlights the importance of magazines to information, due to diversity of topics they cover and the way they approach them. These topics can be news, politics, sports, food, and more.

Apple News+ doesn't just bring PDFs or e-book versions of the magazines, instead their content is adapted to be browsed using a phone. One of interesting enhancements to the typical magazine experience is that even the cover of an issue can be a live image, rather than a static one.

Additonally, Apple News+ includes subscriptions to digital channels such as theSkimm, and there's even newspapers such as the popular Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal. Apple has, as usual, kept privacy in mind with the new service, and article recommendations are made on-device, so no data is sent to the company.

The service launches today through an update to the Apple News app, and it will cost $9.99/mo with support for family sharing, so everyone in your family can access the same content at no extra charge. Apple says that subscribing to each of the available magazines and newspapers would cost $8000 per year, so it does sound like a good deal.

In addition to being available in the United States, Apple News+ is launching in Canada as well, in both English and French editions. It's launching with over 30 magazines in the country, plus one of the most popular Canadian newspapers, The Star. Additionally, the service will also be expanding to the UK and Australia later this year.
