At Computex today, Qualcomm and Lenovo announced the very first Windows 10 PC with 5G connectivity. It's built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx 5G platform, which was first announced at Mobile World Congress this year.
The chipset includes the Snapdragon X55 5G modem, which unlocks some new possibilities compared to the older X50. There's no need for a secondary 4G LTE modem anymore, as the one modem does both now. The X55 supports download speeds of up to 2.5Gbps for Category 22 LTE, so you're always connected.
"At Lenovo, we don’t innovate for the sake of technology alone. Everything we do is about improving people’s experience," said Johnson Jia, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Business of Intelligent Devices Group, Lenovo. "With real 5G in a PC, it’s all about satisfying users’ need for speed: faster file transfers and streaming in 4K, 8K and even AR/VR; faster and higher quality video chats on-the-go; even faster screen refreshes for mobile gaming. When we say limitless connectivity, we mean it – 5G PC users the world-over will save time, stay productive, or get online entertainment from nearly anywhere, at any time."
If you don't remember the Snapdragon 8cx, it was announced at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Tech Summit, promising extreme performance. It's meant to compete with Intel's Core i5, and it won't ship until this holiday season. It's also the world's first 7nm laptop chipset, packing eight Kryo 495 cores and an Adreno 680 GPU.
Not much else is known about Lenovo's new 5G PC. It's only called Project Limitless right now, and it won't ship until 2020. We can see that the design of the convertible is almost identical to the firm's last Snapdragon PC, the Yoga C630, so perhaps it will just end up being called the Yoga C640 or by then, the C650.
