GPD announces the P2 Max, a 8.9-inch ultrabook

GPD has created many successful crowdfunding campaigns for its mini computers in the past, and now the company has a new one. The P2 Max is an ultrabook with an 8.9-inch display, which aims to offer the same capabilities you'd expect from the ultrabook form factor in an even more compact and lighter package that's easier to carry.

Of course, whether that's true or not depends on what you define as an ultrabook and what kind of power you're looking for. The P2 Max is powered by either the Intel Celeron 3986Y or the Core m3-8100Y , the latter of which is the same processor that's inside the recently-announced Chuwi MiniBook. It has either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of NVMe SSD storage.

The 8.9-inch display comes in at a 2560x1600 resolution in the 16:10 aspect ratio and the screen-to-body ratio is 80.9%, so the edges around the display should be fairly small. Maybe because of that, the camera is positioned on the hinge below the display, which is not ideal if you use the webcam on a regular basis. The display itself supports both touch and pen input, though it's not specified if it supports N-Trig or Wacom technology.

As for connectivity, there are two USB Type-A ports, one Type-C port, a micro-HDMI port, and support for Bluetooth 4.2.

The Indiegogo campaign for the GPD P2 Max has already hit 256% of its nearly $90k funding goal, but there are still 45 days to go until it ends. During the campaign, you can get the cheaper model with a Celeron 3865Y processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage for $531 instead of the estimated retail price of $637, or the model with the Core m3-8100Y, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage for $705 instead of $842.
