The team behind Slack has announced a new update to its desktop apps today, and it's a pretty significant one. The latest version of the communications app promises to be a lot faster and more efficient than its predecessors.
For one thing, the app itself will now load up to 33% faster than previous iterations, a welcome improvement if you know how long the app typically takes to open for the first time. Joining calls is also up to 10 times faster than it used to be. In addition to being faster, the new Slack app will also use a lot less memory than before - up to 50% less, specifically.
But that's not all the good news with the latest update. Now, when you're running Slack with an unstable connection, you'll still be able to see your message history from channels you've already opened. You can also perform certain actions - such as changing your status and reacting to messages - while you're offline.
The update begins rolling out today and should be available to everyone over the coming weeks. It's not clear what version number it will carry, but Slack says users will be notified within the app once they're running the latest version. With increased pressure from its rival Microsoft Teams, updates like this could help give users more incentive to stick with Slack.
