Mindovermaster Moderator Posted August 21, 2019 Moderator Share Posted August 21, 2019 You have the screen enabled in Mac display settings? Also, your back light might be dead. Does it work on another computer, perhaps? Just to verify. Very unlikely, but the adapter or HDMI cable might be dead.
jumungo4
Is that in Displays? Do I need to allow dual monitors? Will test later on another computer - HDMI cable I just bought this afternoon.
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted August 21, 2019 Moderator Share Posted August 21, 2019 (edited) I never used Mac, so just the display settings "might" not have the second display detected. Years, years ago we had to do this in Linux, too. HDMI can be DOA. But test that monitor on a different PC just to be sure.
techbeck
I have run in to issues with using adapters to display video. May want to check that. Also, some troubleshooting tips from Apple.... https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201177

Not sure if it so works on newer displays, have not had one go out, but I used to use a flash light to tell if the back light died. Shine the light on the screen and should be able to make out something.

Or you can use a flashlight, too..
DentedAphid7
What adapter you using? I mean what brand and which one? (That shouldn't really matter) Have you go to setting and detect/enable dual display? (I had to do that on mine) Is HDMI cable at it's faults? (Could be faulty cable or the cable don't support your desired resolution)

Does the brightness need to be turned up or is it the backlight that has gone?

I would think you could find a manual online. Also, should be software adjustments in the Mac OS or keyboard key combos.

Mindovermaster Moderator Posted August 22, 2019 Moderator Share Posted August 22, 2019 External monitor still under warranty? If not, you can get a new screen for cheap. Just tell us the model number of your screen. Looks like an Acer.

But as already noted, if your backlight is dead, which is the way it sounds, then you will not see a menu display on the monitor.

So, if it isn't under warranty, just ditch it. It's not worth repairing. You'd spend as much money for a new one than repairing it...
