Samsung unveiled late in October its new 7nm-based Exynos 990 mobile processor with several improvements from the previous-generation SoC. One of those enhancements is the 120Hz refresh-rate capability, which would enable future Galaxy devices to have a much smoother display refresh rate.
Today, a couple of screenshots surfaced online, indicating that Samsung may be preparing to introduce a 120Hz display with the upcoming Galaxy S11 series. Shared by prolific leakster Ice universe on Twitter, the images show a hidden option in the One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note9 which would allow users to switch between 60Hz and 120Hz in manual or automated mode.
Of course, this option won't possibly materialize with the Galaxy Note9 since that phone doesn't have the hardware requirements to support a 120Hz display. However, Ice universeclaims that, if all goes well, the Galaxy S11 phones could include that display feature.
Aside from switching between a 60Hz and 120Hz mode, users may also have additional options for turning off the high refresh rate mode and keep the display at 60Hz. In addition, users can enable the high refresh rate mode and keep 120Hz.
If the feature ever appears in the next-generation Galaxy S devices, it will mark Samsung's first foray into the high refresh rate segment. Already, ASUS' ROG Phone II and the Razer Phone 2 are among the first smartphones to adopt this capability, and rightly so since these are gaming phones.
