I was able to find some good deals on decent parts and was able to run most games I played on my PC ( WoW, Skyrim, some steam games) but now I want to make my PC my main gaming rig. Games like PUBG, Escape for Tarkov, Mabye get into WoW again and not have my frames drop from 70fps to 5fps when a big raid boss fight starts, and pretty much anything. Here is my current set up CPU AMD FX-6350 6-core 3.9Ghz GPU SAPPHIRE DUAL-X Radeon R9 270 DirectX 11.2 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Video Card With BOOST & OC ( I am thinking an upgrade here maybe or a 2nd GPU Via Crossfire or SLI) MthB Biostar TA970 Link to my Mother Board for more INFO RAM Ripjaw X-series 8GB (2x 4GB) of 240 pin DDR3 1600 ( I am thinking I can upgrade Ram from 8GB to 32GB and that would help alot) Is 1866 worth it? PWR Corsair 600W 80 Plus Bronze ( With more Ram and Better/2nd GPU will I need to get a bigger power supply?) OS Windows 7 Pro x64 ( I know that 10 is better but I love windows 7 everything is user friendly and honestly I just know it better than anything else... ) So that's the build minus a few things like a 1 TB SSD and a 1 TB HDD for storage my temps stay pretty cool right around 30°C. I am new here and stumbled across the site and figured I'd ask this knowledgeable group of people before I started buying stuff that wouldn't help improve my PC If you need any other info let me know Ill be checking back quite often. I found these Corsair 8gb ddr3 Ram I could get for about 150 I also found these which are 130 for the same performance I think. GPU will be the hard one I think. If I had around $800 to $900 bucks what could I build? I have been looking through that part picker site and trying to build a new rig in general. I am still using a old monitor that is doesn't even tell you the refresh rate when you look it up on Part Picker. But I do believe its running 1600x900 60hz. With the parts above I added a case because with the extra length on the GPU it wouldn't leave anything more then a 1in gap between my GPU and my HDD SDD trays. Could I trouble you for 2 builds? 1 with a monitor and 1 without both with cases and I'd prefer not to watercool I don't see myself wanting to get into overclocking or needing the extra cooling considering I keep my PC off anyways when not using it. Using that 8 to $900 budget. Also I don't have a way to get my CD code anymore for my Windows 7 can I just plug in my current SSD with my Current OS on there and just set that one as my main Drive? ThaCrip Posted January 24, 2020 Share Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) Personally I don't think it's worth the $ to go from 8GB to 32GB of RAM. 16GB of RAM is probably the sweet spot right now like how 8GB was for many years (hell, 8GB of RAM is still solid short of some newer games, especially for general use). because I can't imagine most, if not all, games would benefit enough to justify the added cost going from 16GB to 32GB of RAM. so I say save the $ and put it towards another component. It's a bad idea to keep on using Windows 7 given Microsoft dropped support of it on Jan 14th. so basically your only real option is to upgrade to Windows 10 which can still be done for free using the official Media Creation Tool. I would say the weakest part of your setup for gaming is probably the lack of video RAM on your GPU as 2GB is not much as for someone who plays video games I would imagine one wants at least 4GB as a general minimum. but if your getting generally strong FPS and it drops off to 5fps, to me that sounds like something is out of whack and not that your computer is actually slow. because my CPU is slower than yours and I don't get those massive drops in frame rate. I got a i3-2120 CPU (Released Feb 2011(I had it since May 2012)) and Geforce 1050 Ti 4GB GPU (had it since July 2017). because while I could have opted for the 2GB version of my 1050, I knew the 4GB would noticeably help long term and it was not much more $ (I paid $135 in July 2017). I would try getting Windows 10 1909 on your PC as after the upgrade process completes, wipe the drive and install Win10 1909 from scratch, update your video card driver to the newest one, and see how your games run. at the end of the day... if your still getting solid all around performance from your games, my advice is don't upgrade right now and wait until you actually need to upgrade as this way you will get more power for less $. it's a more efficient use of ones $ this way. just some thoughts ; I figure ill leave the rest to others for now. 3 hours ago, Kamryn said: So I built my PC back in 2014, I know its super old in PC years. I would not say that's anywhere near 'super old' as lately it seems one can hang onto their hardware much longer than they used to as it seems the key is, at least for gaming, is to have a decent quad core (or higher) CPU with a decent GPU and you will probably be good enough for easily years. You can either find it yourself in the Registry Editor (search on Google!) or use software such as Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to find it for you. Your new build requires Windows 10, but you can use your Windows 7 product key to activate Windows 10.
