Samsung's upcoming foldable phone might come with rubber bumpers to protect the screen

It's just earlier today that Samsung’s next foldable phone dubbed the Galaxy Z Flip leaked in all its glory, ahead of its expected official launch next month. The leaks revealed high quality renders, specifications, and the design of the device. The foldable smartphone is said to sport an “ultra-thin glass” for the display that makes it sturdier than the plastic film found on the Galaxy fold. However, glass is brittle and is susceptible to damage when subjected to force. Samsung’s way of reinforcing such a screen and improving the durability of the phone might do with using rubber bumpers.

Spotted by keen-eyed Twitter user Jonas Daehnert (famously known as PhoneDesigner), the renders reveal what looks like rubber bumpers on the bottom bezel of the device. These bumpers are reminiscent of the ones found in laptop screens that create a gap between the screen and the keyboard. However, on the Galaxy Z Flip, these bumpers likely help soften the force of the impact when the device is closed shut. It is not clear as to what other purposes do these components serve.

It is not surprising to see the South Korean giant take extra steps to ensure the increased reliability of the foldable device after the Galaxy Fold fiasco. Considering that foldable displays are still in their nascent stages, using mechanisms to protect the display, albeit ergonomically unpleasant, could be a smarter move.

As for specifications, the Galaxy Z Flip is expected to sport a 6.7-inch Infinity-O display. The handset is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset, backed up by 8GB RAM and 256GB non-expandable internal storage. Photographic duties are said to be done by dual 12MP cameras at the back – wide-angle and standard shooters. A 10MP front-facing sensor is expected to be housed in the phone. The device will also have a small external screen that is 1.06 inches.
