Google typically started shipping previews of its next major OS updates in mid-March, but here we are a month early, and the first Android 11 developer preview came out today. As expected, it's available for the Pixel 2, 3, 3a, and 4 series of handsets, as well as some Project Treble devices.
One of the first new features spotted is the ability to schedule dark mode for sunset, meaning that when the sun goes down, dark mode will automatically kick in. When the sun comes up, you'll be back in light mode. Obviously, this can be useful at night, when a bright screen might be hard on your eyes.
Other improvements that Google noted in its blog post is that it has better support for 5G with dynamic meteredness and bandwidth estimator APIs, and support for new screen types like waterfall displays or hole-punch cut-outs. There are also new features like bubbles to keep conversations in view and a conversations section in the notifications shade.
Right now, the only way to get the Android 11 preview is to flash it. If you want the OTA beta, you'll have to wait for I/O in May.
