Apple will reportedly add support for an in-display Touch ID to a future model of the Apple Watch, a new report from The Verifier claims. And the tech giant is also said to be introducing blood oxygen sensor and sleeping tracking features to watchOS 7, set to be unveiled at Apple's internet-only WWDC 2020 in June.
The report says the Cupertino-based company will incorporate Touch ID to the Watch Series 7's display. That means we likely won't be seeing that feature on an Apple smartwatch anytime this year as that model is expected to debut in 2021. However, the company is also rumored to be considering adding its biometric authentication system to the digital crown of the Watch Series 6, anticipated this year. It's not clear, though, how Apple plans to achieve the latter design as the digital crown houses the electrocardiogram feature in the current Watch design, with a titanium electrode covering its faceplate.
In addition, the report also corroborates a previous rumor claiming that a future Watch model may receive the ability to detect blood-oxygen levels and monitor sleep, which will reportedly come with watchOS 7. However, this feature may not be available on the Watch Series 2 as this model won't be receiving the watchOS 7 update. It will still get minor updates and bug fixes for another year, though. Other rumored improvements coming to watchOS 7 include extended capabilities for Siri as well as LTE support and WiFi 6 connectivity for the Series 6.
