Minecraft Dungeons gets a May 26 release date on all platforms

Mojang, the development team behind the Minecraft franchise, has finally announced a firm release date for the upcoming dungeon crawler and action RPG, Minecraft Dungeons. After it was promised for an April release, the game is now slated to arrive on all current-generation platforms on May 26.

Earlier this month, in light of current events around the world, the team warned users on Twitter that it was working to get the game out in April, but the schedule was subject to change since everyone is working from home. It seems that the delay was inevitable given the circumstances.

Minecraft Dungeons was first announced back in 2018, and initially planned for a release in 2019. While it's set in the blocky world of Minecraft, its gameplay is mostly inspired by dungeon crawlers like the Diablo franchise, doing away with the building elements of the original. There are no character classes in the game, and instead, all of the player's abilities are determined by the items they carry.

The game supports multiplayer, both through couch co-op and online, but there are no matchmaking servers, and players are encouraged to play with friends rather than strangers. At launch, players can only come together if they're on the same platform, but the team is working to add support for cross-platform multiplayer in a future update.

As for price, the base Minecraft Dungeons game will cost $19.99, but there's also the $29.99 Hero Edition, which includes the Hero Pass with a few additional cosmetic items: the Hero Cape, two player skins, and a chicken pet. The Hero Edition also includes two DLC packs that will be released later. The base game will be included with Xbox Game Pass, and those that have subscribed to the service can also get 10% off the upcoming DLC packs.

The game can now be pre-ordered for PC through the Minecraft Dungeons website, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers can pre-install the game on PC and Xbox One starting today. Pre-orders aren't available for other platforms, at least for now.
