Tagging on mounted drives?

I am working toward encryption for files on the cloud. When evaluating software solutions for this I came across multiple solutions which essentially mount the cloud file system to your Mac, then handles the encryption locally before syncing to whichever cloud provider you use.

 

I uses tags fairly heavy on my Mac right now for productivity but I can't seem to get tagging files to work on any mountable drive (thumb drives, network storage, etc). The file will appear as tagged when you look at it, but when you search for the tag the file doesn't show up in the results. Has anyone successfully managed to use tagging on a mounted device in a Mac?
